Lee Funeral Home - OwingsJoyce Elaine Smithwick, a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away peacefully on November 1, 2025. To the day she passed, Joyce maintained her kindness, grace, compassion, and love of her family and friends. She expressed gratitude for her long life full of wonderful and varied experiences. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She was born to Earl and Eva Green. Her childhood home was on the family farm in Stafford County, Virginia. Joyce often shared her fond memories of growing up on a farm with her sister, Mary Jane. Joyce's family moved to the District of Columbia where she graduated from Eastern High School and met the love of her life, Arthur Smithwick, her husband of 64 years. Together they went on to have three daughters. Joyce's nurturing spirit, unwavering support, and boundless love will forever live on in the hearts of her daughters.
Joyce's smile and spirit would light up a room. She loved traveling, playing tennis, cards, and games. Most of all she loved being with her family.
While raising her children, she pursued a career in the Federal Government. Joyce retired at age 74 from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Department of Defense. During her career she was bestowed with many accolades and accommodations.
Joyce was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Smithwick, and her parents Earl and Eva Green. Joyce is survived by her sister, Mary Jane Williard; daughters, Deborah Pritts, Karen McCutcheon, and Denise Bowman (Daniel); her grandchildren, Dale Pritts (Miranda), Danielle Solak (John), Caitlin Bowman, and Brandon McCutcheon; her great-grandchildren, Declan, Rylee, and Callum Pritts.
A celebration of Joyce's life will be held on December 21, 2025, at 1:30 pm (service at 1:45 pm with fellowship to follow) at Herrington Harbour South, 7149 Lake Shore Drive, North Beach, Maryland 20714.
