Michael John Smolka (age 75) of Maryville, TN passed away on March 19, 2026.

Born on January 20, 1951, Michael grew up in Racine, Wisconsin with his parents, Michael and Ann, and three sisters, Kathy, Diane, and Mary Jo. Michael had a creative and adventurous personality that showed in his passion for music and a move to Tennessee in his early 20's to make a lifelong home surrounded by the beauty of the mountains.

Michael worked in construction and real estate for many years, and in his free time found joy as a musician and peace in the outdoors. For more than 50 years, he built a life centered on family, dedication, and care for those around him.

Michael was blessed to share 5½ years of marriage with his wife, Vilma, also known as Mimi. He was the proud father of two daughters: Sarah (Anthony) Joyce and Laura (Jared) Headrick. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, and granddaddy, and will be greatly missed.

His grandchildren include Kaylee, Eva and Owen Headrick, and Elena Joyce. His family also includes his two stepsons Eric Laney and Richard Laney, and his stepdaughter, Starra Wall, along with seven step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Michael is remembered by his sisters, Mary Jo Lipari and Katherine (Jim) Kaltenschnee; His nieces Dawn Ivanoski, Ann Kessler, and Lisa Atherton; His nephews Robert Kaltenschnee, James Kaltenschnee, Robert Lipari, Matthew Johnson, and Mason Johnson. He shared close friendships with Eddie and Patti Jirgensen (known as Uncle Eddie and Aunt Patti by his daughters), Tim Robbins, and Dale Myers.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Ann (Harinek) Smolka; his sister, Diane Kessler; and his granddaughter, Elowen Headrick.

Michael and Mimi attended Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. His family is grateful for all the love and support its members have shown to them.
