Mike Spanier, age 73, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Edinburg, ND, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.
Michael William Spanier was born on January 6, 1952, to Jacob and LaVerne (Eckberg) Spanier. He was raised and educated in Edinburg, ND, where he graduated from Edinburg High School in 1970. Throughout his youth, he was a standout athlete in basketball and football and later enjoyed playing softball on the Blue Moon softball team.
On June 4, 1971, Mike married Ina Levang, and they established their home in Edinburg. Shortly after their marriage, he began his career with Polar Communications in Park River, ND, where he dedicated over 40 years of service. His unwavering commitment to his work was recognized when he received the inaugural “Eagle Award” upon his retirement in 2007.
Mike held a steadfast commitment to his community, serving on the local fire department from 1976 to 2018. He played a significant role in founding the Quick Response team in Edinburg and served as Mayor for several years. His efforts were instrumental in the development of the Post Office and Community Center in Edinburg. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Edinburg, Mike contributed his time and talent to the Church Council.
As a father, Mike was actively involved in his sons’ lives, coaching various youth sports teams and his involvement with the “Quarterback Club,” which organized community fundraising events to support local athletics. His encouragement and support were a constant source of motivation for his sons, Eric and Evan, through their academic and sporting endeavors.
After retiring, Mike and Ina moved to Moorhead to be closer to their grandchildren. He cherished every opportunity to share family moments, providing unwavering support and celebrating their milestones.
Mike is survived by his loving wife, Ina; his two sons, Eric (Latisha) Spanier of Moorhead and Evan (Lindsay) Spanier of Fargo; and seven grandchildren, Ahnika, Logan, Ben, Ethan, Rachel, Avery, and Ryland. He is also survived by his siblings, Ken (Holly) Spanier, Laurie Spanier, Tammy (Paul) Blomstedt, and Trina (Neil) Gilberg, along with several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and LaVerne Spanier; two brothers, Doug Spanier and David Spanier; one nephew, Darren Spanier; and one niece, Jennifer Spillers.
Per Mike’s request, no formal services will be held.
