Michael Edward Stegner, son of the late Frances Marie Stegner and Raymond Henry Stegner, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 7.
Born on November 25, 1944, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Michael's life was marked by purpose and passion. He was a proud graduate of St. Vincent's College in Latrobe, PA, and earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Before beginning his legal career, Michael served five distinguished years in the U.S. Navy aboard a nuclear submarine-a journey that brought him to Charleston, South Carolina, where he met the love of his life, Neal. They were blessed with 52 years of marriage, building a life in Camden with their children and friends.
Michael is survived by his wife, Neal Adden Stegner, three sons, Ben Stegner (Margaret), Craig Stegner (Jen), and Jay Stegner (Jennifer), and grandchildren Addie (18), Mae (16), Annabelle (10), Clayton (9), Luther (8), and Josie (6). He is also survived by his sisters, Judy Chad (Greg) and Mary Sue Frank (Jeff); brother- and sister-in-law Nancy and Aris Newton; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
For Michael, family was everything. He was ever-present in the lives of his children, coaching their sports teams and supporting every endeavor with enthusiasm and love. He found great joy in time spent together at Lake Wateree, Edisto Beach, and the family home in Flat Rock, NC. He was an avid cyclist, usually riding 20+ miles each day after work and competing in dozens of races over the years. Boating and fishing were among his other favorite pastimes, often shared with his sons.
A man of many talents, Michael was a gifted artist and poet. His artistic work ranged from painting and sketching to sculpture, and his poetry was published in several collections, including two poetry books of his own. He balanced his creative passions with a long and respected legal career, practicing law for 36 years and serving as a Municipal Judge for the City of Camden for 20 years.
Michael was also a man of faith and community. He was a dedicated member of Grace Episcopal Church, where he sang in the choir for many years, sharing his voice in worship and fellowship.
Michael will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his generous spirit, his sharp mind, and his artistic soul. His was a life well-lived, full of grace, humility, and heart. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know and love him.
The family would like to extend a special and sincere thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Roy E. Stone Veterans Pavilion for their exceptional care, compassion, and support over the past five and a half years. Your dedication and kindness made all the difference in Michael's final chapter, and we are forever grateful.
