Michael Orrin Thompson

Michael Orrin Thompson, 62, of McLeod, North Dakota, passed away Sunday, December 24, 2023, in Wyndmere, ND.  His visitation is scheduled from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton, ND, with his prayer service starting at 7 p.m.  Michael’s funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at Bethany Lutheran Church in McLeod, ND.  Burial will take place at Freeman Cemetery in rural McLeod.  Joel Wiltse will be officiating the services.  Services have been entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home in Wahpeton, ND. 

Michael Orrin Thompson, a beloved member of the community, passed away on December 24, 2023. He was born on October 20, 1961, in Breckenridge, MN, to Orrin and Marilyn (Helgeson) Thompson. Michael grew up in McLeod, ND, where he attended his first three years of school before continuing his education in Wyndmere, ND. Throughout his life, Michael remained deeply connected to his rural roots and found great joy in working the land and tending to his animals.

One of Michael's defining qualities was his genuine concern for others. Even after he became bedridden, he made countless phone calls to check on the well-being of those around him.  He eagerly welcomed anyone who would stop by for a visit over a cup of coffee. Having a great sense of humor, he could come up with a “one-liner” for any situation.  Michael loved his grandchildren dearly. His presence in the community will be sorely missed as he leaves behind a legacy defined by compassion and goodwill. 

Mike's passion for animals extended beyond farming. He had a deep love for horses. In addition, hunting and fishing were among his favorite pastimes. Michael spent countless hours hunting coyotes with the Greyhound dogs he raised. Additionally, he skillfully played league pool and was an avid team roper. 

Michael is survived by his daughters, Carissa and Mariah Thompson; grandchildren, Jimena, Hayden, and Iyla; and a sister, Kimberly Thompson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Orrin and Marilyn; grandparents, Oscar and Alma Thompson, and Martin and Nellie Helegson.
