Michael Tierney Obituary
SALEM- Mr. Michael F. Tierney, 71, of Salem, passed away peacefully at Brigham and Women s Hospital in Boston, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Salem he was the son of the late Thomas J. and Helen A. (Kennedy) Tierney. He was raised and educated in Salem and was a graduate of Bishop Fenwick High school in Peabody. Michael continued his education and earned his bachelor s degree in Business Administration from Merrimack College.
Following graduation, Michael began his career as an administrator at Brigham and Women s Hospital, but soon took a different path and embarked on a long and distinguished career at the Massachusetts State House, first as a Senate aid and later as Sergeant at Arms where he was responsible for enforcing all the rules, protocols, and orders of the Senate. He was on a first name basis and well respected by Governors and Senate leaders of several administrations, serving in his various positions for over 35 years until the time of his retirement.
A devoted family man, he was an extraordinary and loving son, brother, uncle, and friend. His passion was his family and he was truly happiest when surrounded by them, always willing to be the first to help any of them in need of anything he had to give. His many nieces and nephews were like his own children. He was involved in and attended many of their activities, was ever present at their milestones and the first one to congratulate them on their accomplishments.
Devoted to his faith, Michael was an active member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church and a longtime leader of their chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He had a long-term relationship with the Salem YMCA and served on their Board for many years. Michael was a people person through and through. He never met a stranger, rather just a friend he hadn t met before. He was always the first to lend a hand to anyone who needed help. Michael will be forever remembered for his devotion to his family, his generosity and kindness to others and will be deeply missed by his loving family and many friends.
Michael is pre-deceased by his brother Thomas Tierney. Surviving Michael are his loving sisters, Mary C. Guilmette of Peabody and Ellen Miller of Danvers, his nieces, Ellen Caron, Christine Woltag, Brenda Augenstene, Linda Tierney, and Kristen DiTucci, and his nephews, Stephen Guilmette, Brian Tierney, Thomas Miller, John Guilmette, and David Miller and many great nieces and nephews.
