Michael Anthony Tomanelli, 67, of Swanville Maine, passed away peacefully in his home on October 27th, 2025.
Mike was born April 28th, 1958 to the late Michael and Claire Tomanelli. He is survived by his two sons Michael and Mathew, their wives Rachel and Emily, and his grandchildren, Tommy, Daisy and Miles.
"Big Mike" was born and raised in Coventry Connecticut, surrounded by his loving parents and siblings, Joe, John, Tony, Jim, and Anne-Marie. Big Mike was an incredible athlete, earning his varsity letters for basketball and soccer. Big Mike went on to receive a full athletic scholarship for soccer at Eastern CT State University, which unfortunately was lost after suffering a career ending injury. Big Mike spent his formative years cruising around in his muscle car, listening to the Grateful Dead, his favorite band to this day!
For most of his professional career Big Mike was the owner of Tomco Roofing, where he supported his family as a carpenter and roofer. Big Mike enjoyed watching football, baseball, and basketball, hunting (though never actually hitting anything), and chopping wood to supply his wood stove. His children have fond memories of their weekends spent splitting and stacking wood with the promise of Burger King as payment for their efforts.
Later in life Big Mike moved to Maine where he could be more at peace closer to nature and his younger brother Tony, his best friend. Big Mike's professional career ended as he had a workplace accident causing him to fall through staging breaking both ankles and feet. Brother Tony, wife Sarah, nephew Nick, nieces Marianna, and Isabelle were essential pieces of Big Mike's rehabilitation to walk again. Through this recovery process Big Mike, Tony, and baby brother Jim worked themselves to build a house for Mike on a wooded lot in Swanville Maine, where after they finished the two brothers spent their time opening the newest Pokemon card sets. An activity that brought them both immense joy, letting them relive the times they shared with their children in the early 2000's.
Big Mike was a force of nature; his presence was immediately noticed upon entering any room. Though he may have looked gruff with his wild grey hair and long beard, he was the sweetest most kind man you ever met. Big Mike was a helper, offering up his expertise in building and repair to anyone that was willing to share a cold beer and a story with him. The world will remember the mark that Big Mike left on it, whether it be by the catchphrases, or the half finished projects, the memory of Big Mike Tomanelli will never be forgotten.
At this time there is no plan for a memorial service, but plans are in place to hold a celebration of life in his honor in the summer of 2026.
