Albany – Michael S. VanAlstyne, 58, passed away peacefully on July 24, 2024 surrounded by his loving family at The St. Peter's Hospice Inn after a brief illness. He is the son of Georgia Damino and the late Allen VanAlstyne, Sr.
After high school, Mike joined The United States Army where he served as a combat engineer for six years. Mike was employed by the City of Albany as a Traffic Engineer for 33 years until his retirement. He also worked nights at SUNY for more than 26 years. Mike's work ethic was unmatched. He enjoyed music, especially heavy metal and classic rock. He also enjoyed action and horror movies. Mike's favorite place on earth was soaking up the sun at camp in Lake Sacandaga. He also loved long walks and caring for his beloved canine companion, Odyssey
In addition to his mother, Mike is survived by the mother of his children, Rosemary VanAlstyne; his children, Amber (Jordan Crandall) VanAlstyne and Jacob VanAlstyne; his brother, Allen (Betty Lord) VanAlstyne, Jr.; his cherished canine companion, Odyssey; his step-father, John Damino; his step-sisters, Jacqueline (John) Wingfelder, Kimberly (Bill) Mainville and Michelle (Glenn) Gorman; and his uncle, Robert Sanborn. Mike was also survived by many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
A memorial service for Mike will be held on Saturday August 3rd at 1:00 pm at Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave. in Albany, where friends and relatives will be encouraged to share their favorite memories of Mike. Calling hours will be held prior to the service from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm. The family would like to remind everyone that this is a celebration of Mike's life and not his death, so you are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and "come as you are" as Mike wouldn't want you to get fancy for him. He will be sorely missed by all those who were lucky enough to know him.
