Remembering a Life Well Lived
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Michael "Troy" Willis, who departed this world on Monday, June 23, 2025. Troy was a beloved son, brother, grandson, cherished friend, and a bright light and large presence to this world in which he left too soon.
Born on December 1, 1968, Troy grew up in Virginia Beach and Currituck and then headed to UNC Chapel Hill, Atlanta ultimately returning to Virginia Beach where he shared is love of making people feel special, happy and bringing joy to so many people he met. In talking to so many people these past few days the words and feelings seemed to be the same message "Troy was always smiling, happy and was a big presence that will be missed." Troy was known for his ability to make the world a more beautiful place through his love of design (furniture, interiors and fashion).
Among his many passions, Troy was deeply devoted to giving back to those who experienced domestic abuse and older adults in nursing homes, which brought joy not only to his own life but to those around them. His generosity knew no bounds, and his ability to see the good in others made him a beacon of hope in challenging times.
Troy is survived by his mother (Patricia Willis), sister (Laurie Jordan (and husband Howard), brother (Ryan Willis (and husband Rodney Harkey), niece (Sarah Ritter) and an aunt and cousins. He will be joining his father (Michael Willis) who passed on April 17, 2022, but will be mourned by a community of friends and colleagues whose lives were touched by their warmth and wisdom. While his physical presence will be deeply missed, his spirit will forever remain a guiding light in our hearts.
It was Troy's wishes to not have a memorial service, but instead to have people think of him when they see or create beauty in the world. His family had a small personal memorial dinner to talk about so many of the great (and funny) memories of this beautiful person.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Samaritan's House in Virginia Beach that helps people with domestic violence and homelessness.
Rest in peace, Troy. Your legacy of love and kindness will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know you.
