Michael Zeckel died on February 29, 2024 at age 76. He was born on January 29, 1948 to Rosa (Singer) and Stanley Jack Zeckel. He attended Wabash college, graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1973, completed internal medicine residency in 1975 and fellowship in infectious diseases in 1977.
Mike practiced infectious disease at Methodist hospital starting in 1977, and left medical practice to join Eli Lilly and Company in 1990 to develop antibiotics for antibiotic resistant bacterial infections. In 2000 he began work in drug safety for Eli Lilly before retiring in 2017. While at Eli Lilly, Mike volunteered as a physician at Gennesaret Free Clinic from 1991 to 2015. He had a wonderful life with love for Sara, family, and his work.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Sara Zeckel; son Ben Zeckel (Jessica), son Isaac Zeckel (Kate), and daughter Monica Rivard (Tyler); sisters Cynthia Pakula (Barry), Sandra Dickens (Mark), and Susan Sterling (Michael); brothers Fred Zeckel (Tami) and Richard Zeckel (Sandy); and grandchildren (Allison, Cecilia, Riva and Paul).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gennesaret Free Clinic, Gleaners Community Food Bank, or the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN).
Graveside services will be held on Sunday, March 3rd at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation North Cemetery, 1300 East 161st Street, Westfield, IN 46074 at 11 AM.
