What a privilege to be gifted by God with a long time friend such as Michelle! My first year at VCS was 1996, and Dave was in my first class at Valley. He was a character - bright with a sense of humor and mischief, and Michelle was a great parent for my first year. She loved and appreciated her boy, but never made excuses. That is when I first encountered this amazing quality with which the Lord gifted Michelle - to see, appreciate, and celebrate the good in others with a joyful heart. The K class were always our fourth grade buddies, and Michelle always had a hug and cheerful word for all. She could also give "the look". You know the one, the one that said, "Really??? Are you kidding me??"
We had many great years at VCS together, some were harder than others. Through each situation, Michelle trusted the Lord to be at work in her life. It was sad for me when she retired, but I was so grateful to keep in touch. She would meet me for lunch or breakfast, and we would catch up. Michelle always had stories of her own kids and grandkids. She truly was a loving example of what it means to pour out your life and love for others. When the time came for her and Tom to move away, she always made sure to connect with my girls and me the several times a year we would make the trek out her way for apples, Kitchen Kettle, or Sight and Sound. We would get lunch or breakfast, and, of course, stop at Maplehoff for ice cream. My girls, who had known her at Valley, quickly came to love her even more. It was easy to give her a place in your heart.
I have to say that I am humbly grateful to the Lord and to Tom for making possible our last visit together at Maplehoff not long before she went to the hospital. So grateful for one more hug and one more time to catch up. God in His sovereignty gave us those moments, precious moments with a dear dear friend.
I am also grateful to have shared a common faith with my friend Michelle. And so, I can trust that we do not sorrow as those who have no hope. Rather, I will rejoice and see my dear friend again
