Michelle Jeannine Oaks Mattocks, 69, of Albany, GA, passed away Sunday, November 16, 2025 in Salem, VA. Her funeral service will be held Saturday at 11:30 AM, at Mathews Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at Mathews.
Michelle, also known as “Shel”, was born in Corona, CA on June 27, 1956 to the late Charles W. Oaks, Major, USMC and Jean Remington Oaks. She graduated from Woodbridge Senior High School in 1974. After moving to Albany, GA, she continued her education, graduating from Albany Junior College in 1976 with an Associate Degree in Science. Michelle began her career in Albany, GA, working in Public Relations with Mr. Gene Caruso at his local McDonalds in 1974 and she continued to work for "Mr. C" (as he was known) and all five of his Stores until she bought the Cakery in 1997. She was a Fred Astaire Dance Studios Ball Room Dance Instructor beginning in 1983 and continued teaching ball room dance throughout Southwest Georgia until present. She owned and operated The Cakery until December of 2018, retiring in January of 2019.
Michelle was very active in her community being a member of The Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post #30, heavily involved with the Albany chapter of Crime Stoppers, served on the board of Open Arms from 1992-2008, was a member of The Arts Council, a volunteer for the annual Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon, participated in the local Dancing With The Stars production, and helped with the formation of The Ronald McDonald House in Tallahassee, FL.
Michelle had many hobbies, baking being one of course, along with crocheting, painting, traveling, playing card and board games, writing poetry and especially Ball Room Dancing (she won many medals and awards in competition). Michelle owned several cocker spaniels since she was 25 and currently has a female cocker spaniel named Sundae.
Michelle was preceded in death by her sister, Denise Moffett.
Survivors include her husband, Charles L. “Chip” Mattocks, Jr. of Albany, GA, her sister, Viki Oaks of Cumming, GA, her nephews, Dalton Moffett of Fairplay, CO and Chayton Oaks Thompson of Cumming, GA, a niece, Awbrey Moffett of Chicago, IL, a brother-in-law, Wes Moffett of Fairplay, CO, aunts and uncles, Dottie Lewis of Rogers, AK, Jim (Merrie) Oaks of Coal Valley, IL, Bobby (Julie) Oaks of Yoder, WY, Ken (Sue) Remington of Akron, CO, Terri (Paul) Remington of Tolley, ND and Karen Shonka of Sterling, CO.
