LANCASTER, SC – Mr. J. Michael “Mike” Brown, age 74, passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2026. He was born June 5, 1951, in Anderson, SC, the son of the late John Leonard Brown and Jean Kelly Brown and was the loving husband of Tammy Catoe Brown. Mike previously worked alongside Mike Hinson at Hinson’s Body Shop and later served as the marine manager at Wateree Marina, where many knew him simply as “the Boatman.” He had a deep love for the outdoors and adventure - whether traveling, camping, spending time at the beach, or enjoying days on the lake. A devoted NASCAR fan, Mike proudly cheered for Dale Earnhardt and never missed a chance to talk racing.
He was an avid diver who enjoyed fishing, water skiing, and riding his motorcycle, always drawn to the freedom of the open road and open water. A die-hard Clemson Tiger fan, Mike supported his team with pride and enthusiasm.
Above all, Mike cherished his family. He was deeply involved in the lives of his nieces and nephews, lovingly helping care for them and sharing countless life lessons that will be carried forward for years to come. Mike was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he found community and strength in his faith.
Mike is survived by his wife of 36 years, Tammy Brown; a daughter, Melody Roberts (Timmy); three grandchildren, Chase Roberts (Taylor), Evan Roberts and Emma Roberts; and one great grandson, Charles Brooks Roberts; a sister, Sheila Gilbert (Robert); nieces and nephews; Christy Miller, Josh Miller, Cory Hicks, Jordan Hicks, Breanna Hicks, Angie Miller and Melissa Fraunfelter; and 9 great nieces and nephews; and three great-great nephews.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, John Leonard Brown and Jean Kelly Brown.
The Celebration of Life Funeral Service for Mike will be 2:00 pm, Friday, January 30, 2026, at New Hope Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. Adam Wright and Rev. Mendle Baker. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm, Friday in the church foyer.
In lieu of flowers, for those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, Building Fund, 3731 Lynwood Drive, Lancaster, SC 29720.
