Mike LaPlant Obituary

Michael Glenn LaPlant was born in 1954 to Virgil and Vera (Jerry) LaPlant in Hereford Texas. When he was two years old, they moved to Moses Lake, WA and settled at the family farm outside of Ephrata. He was active in 4-H, raising and showing steers at the Grant County Fair. He graduated from Ephrata High School in 1972. He met and married Carol Smith in 1976 and settled on their own farm shortly after. Mike was a diversified farmer mostly focused on alfalfa. Mike was active in the Grant County Farm Bureau. He served in the Washington State Farm Bureau as first vice president and then served as the President for 10 years. He also served a position on the National Farm Bureau board. Mike served on the Qunicy Irrigation District, Columbia Basin Development League, and President of the National Water Resources Association. Mike served as a volunteer firefighter and was on the board of Grant County 15 Fire District. Mike enjoyed woodworking and leathercrafting as a hobby. He made personalized toyboxes for all of his children and grandchildren.

Mike passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. He is survived by his wife Carol of 49 years, children Scott LaPlant (Andrea) of Spokane, WA, Lisa LaPlant of Ellensburg, WA, and Katie Schlagheck (Adam) of Genoa, OH. Mike is also survived by his grandchildren Brendan, Callum, and Harlow LaPlant, Paige, Henry, and Myles Schlagheck. He is also survived by his mother Vera (Jerry), brothers Mark (Sandy) and Steve (Sally) LaPlant and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father Virgil LaPlant.

A service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2026 at 1pm at Our Redeemer Presbyterian Church of Ephrata. A Graveside service will be held at 11:30am at Valley View Memorial Park, Soap Lake, WA.
