Mike Sophy

Michael Merrill Sophy passed away on October 28, 2025, in Phoenix, Arizona. Born on June 20, 1935, in Rapid City, South Dakota, he was the son of Lucille and Merle Sophy. He spent his early years in Minnesota and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1957.
Following college, Mike embarked on a life of service and adventure teaching English in Ghana, where he met his future wife, Sandra Beregovsky. After their time in Africa, the couple settled in Arizona, where Mike pursued a law degree at the University of Arizona. He began practicing law in 1966 and eventually became a partner at the Phoenix firm Goddard, Sophy and L'Ecuyer.
In 1989, Mike took over management of the family Culligan water treatment business in Mankato, Minnesota. Under his leadership, the business expanded to include dealerships in Madelia, Jackson, Redwood Falls, and a drinking water bottling division.
Mike and Sandra raised two sons, Daniel and Joseph. Their home was known for its warmth-filled with spirited conversations, delicious meals prepared by Mike, and an assortment of beloved pets including dogs, cats, and even a pot-bellied pig.
A passionate Democrat with a keen interest in politics, Mike played key roles in several Arizona campaigns. He managed successful races for Bruce Babbitt's attorney general campaign and Terry Goddard's mayoral run in Phoenix. He also served as Western coordinator for Ed Muskie's presidential campaign.
Mike was predeceased by his wife Sandra and their sons Daniel and Joseph. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched in Arizona and beyond.
