It is with deep sorrow, yet steadfast hope in Christ, that we announce the passing of Mel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Mel entered his eternal rest peacefully at MD Anderson, after a courageous journey through cancer, carried by the faith that guided his life and the love that surrounded him.
Born on August 13, 1952, Mel devoted his life to learning, service, and faith. He attended the University of Houston and later earned his law degree from the University of Tennessee. His early career included influential work for the State of Texas and Senators, drafting legislation with care and purpose. He went on to serve as a legislative lawyer for the University of Texas, where his dedication and integrity were widely respected.
Answering a deeper calling, Mel later entered seminary to become a United Methodist pastor. In 2003, he received his first appointment at George West United Methodist Church. Over the years, he faithfully served several congregations, including La Grange UMC, St. John's UMC, New Fountain UMC, Valley Spring UMC, and Cherokee UMC. His ministry was marked by humility, compassion, and a sincere desire to shepherd others toward Christ.
Mel is survived by his devoted wife whom he loved until his last breath, Maurie, of
Georgetown, Texas, whose partnership with him was grounded in love, devotion, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to living out their faith. He is also survived by the children he loved as his own: Andrew Finley and his wife, Ali, of Austin, Texas; and Ashlie Monday and her husband, Phil, of Bellevue, Texas. To his grandchildren-Caleb, Caitlyn, and Beau-Mel was a gentle example of what it means to walk in faith, humility, and grace.
He is also survived by his sisters, Suzanne and her husband, Bob Wyatt, of Frisco, Texas, and Agnes Holland of Huntsville, Texas. Their lifelong bond reflects the deep roots of family devotion, shared memories, and enduring love.
A faithful steward of Christ, Mel approached life with a servant's heart and a spirit grounded in prayer. His walk with the Lord shaped every part of his life-his relationships, decisions, ministry, and the quiet strength with which he met each day. He lived his faith through kindness, patience, generosity, and a sincere desire to reflect Christ's love to all he encountered. His home was one of grace; his counsel, rooted in scripture; and his life, a testament to unwavering belief.
As we mourn his passing, we take comfort in the assurance that Mel is now at peace in the presence of his Savior. His legacy of faith will continue to inspire the many lives he touched, offering guidance, comfort, and encouragement for generations to come.
May he rest in eternal peace, held forever in God's loving embrace and remembered always with profound gratitude and love.
The Celebration of Mel's life will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 23rd, 2025 at Wellspring UMC, 6200 Williams Drive,
Georgetown, TX 78633.
