Mildred Andrews Obituary
Published by Porter Loring Mortuary McCullough on Aug. 22, 2007.
For more than 90½ years, Mildred Elizabeth Andrews lived her life for the Lord and on August 22, 2007, he called her home.
Born January 21, 1917, to Lena and John William Lindsey Whitten, she was the youngest of five children. A mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many, Mildred, also known as Granny, was a woman of incredible strength, immense faith and profound understanding. She faced adversity head on, was neither judgmental nor critical of others and never one to complain.
Mildred was a devout Christian who always sat in the front row of church, and was dedicated to helping others know her savior. She was a Sunday school Bible teacher for 62 years, a church choir member for 50 years and active in intercessory prayer for more than 60 years. Mildred was also interested in evangelical outreach and went on 15 mission trips, including a trip to China with Arthur Blessit and traveled to Switzerland with Jack Taylor. She was a role model and mentor to many.
In 1936, Mildred married Henry Mansfield Hunter Sr. They moved to San Antonio in 1939, had five children and together built Hunter Services. They were members of First Baptist Church and later Castle Hills First Baptist Church. After Henry died in 1973, she was fortunate to have found a loving companion in an old friend, Ray Andrews, whom she married in 1978. Ray was the sunshine in her life and adored her tremendously. Mildred was generously blessed with this special gift of reciprocal love until he passed away in 1985.
Throughout her life, Mildred wore many hats—both figuratively and literally. She was an avid collector of fine millinery and never met a Ferragamo shoe she didnÂ't love. Always an active and healthy woman, she gleefully boasted that she was 70 when she first water-skied. Mildred enjoyed traveling, working and helping those who were in need. In her final months, she most relished lunching at La Fonda at Sunset Ridge, watching Little House on the Prairie, spending time with family and watching the birds flock to her enchanted garden.
She was preceded in death by her father, John William Lindsey Whitten; mother, Lena Whitten; husbands, Henry Mansfield Hunter Sr. and Raymond Andrews; brothers, Lindsey, George and John Whitten; and son, Henry Buster Mansfield Hunter Jr. Mildred is survived by her sister, Marguerite Henderson; daughter, Jeanne Hunter; son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Paula Hunter; daughter, Mildred Hohensee; and daughter and son-in-law, Marguerite and Philip N. Hudson. She also leaves behind 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family is most grateful to the eldest grandchild, Dr. Mishaleen Missi Allen, whose love and tenderness brought exceptional joy and peace to Mildred during her last four months of life. In addition, the family extends special thanks to Sue Locastro and Mary Kay Smith of Samaritan Care Hospice whose expertise, love and compassion were indispensable to Mildred and her family.
