Our beloved Mildred Bynum, 96, departed this life on Sunday, December 14, 2025 in her home in
East Orange, New Jersey. She was born on May 8, 1929, in
Seaboard, North Carolina to the late Nelouis Bynum and Bertha L. Rawls-Bynum. She was the 6th of 13 children.
Mildred attended Buffalo Elementary School in Gumberry, North Carolina and graduated from Garysburg High School in 1947 in
Garysburg, North Carolina. She welcomed the birth of her only son, Jesse Bynum and then relocated to Durham, N.C. Later she relocated to New Jersey. Once in New Jersey, she met and married the late Rufus Lane in 1950. In 1951 she furthered her education at the McDowell School in New York City, obtaining her Dressmaking and Designing Degree. She became a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
Mildred started her career as a seamstress at Philstone Sewing Company in Newark, N.J. until retiring in 1993. The love of her life was always making garments for other various companies though out her life, as well as if you were a friend or family member who needed something made or altered, she would be the one you needed to see. Sewing and designing was what she dedicated her life to doing. She loved and enjoyed being a seamstress and creating garments for everyone.
Mildred was lovingly known as Miss Milly Jay to her family. She was always the most down to earth, fun-loving person and was the entertainer of the family as well as the best baby-sitter you could find. All children that she came in contact with loved her. She affectionately gave nick-names to us all and enjoyed going to bingo and liked to dance. Every conversation with her was always interesting.
She leaves to cherish her memories: Her son: Jesse J. Bynum and wife the late Sheila of Mytle Beach, SC, Her grandchildren: Jesse "Botchie" Bynum Jr. and wife Amalia Caftelino of Seattle, Washington, Shyree Smith-Boyd and husband Kelvin of NJ and the late Gerard Bynum, Her great grandchildren: Jasmine and Jaylin.
