Mildred Dowtin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by H.D. Pope Funeral Home - Roanoke Rapids on Oct. 15, 2025.
Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina
Mildred Jenkins Dowtin, a devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and retired nurse, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at ECU Medical Center after a brief illness. She was 98 years old. Born to the late Parthenia and Thomas Jenkins, Mildred was the eldest and last surviving of six siblings. She was also the oldest grandchild of Irene Whitfield Jones.
Throughout her life, Mildred dedicated herself to caring for others-both through her long nursing career and through her unwavering devotion to her family, neighbors, and friends.
She was the beloved wife of the late Army Sergeant Joe Lee Dowtin, with whom she shared a wonderful and loving life. Mildred was a proud mother of six children: the late Joann, the late Lance Corporal Thomas, Clara, the late Janice, Robin, and the late Alvino.
Her legacy of love and care continues through her cherished grandchildren: Damien, Ingrid, Nytasha, Sojomo, Josiah, LaWanna, Jamea, Jy, Brendan, and Tomeka, as well as her eighteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Mildred will also be dearly missed by her adored sons-in-law, Winfred, John, and Ricky, along with a host of extended family and many dear friends, especially those from Winchester and Stephens City, Virginia.
She had Special love for a host of nieces and nephews.
A woman of deep and abiding faith, Mildred was a longtime member of Simmons Grove Baptist Church and also attended services at Shearins Chapel, London, Twilight, and, most recently, True-Life Ministry. Her steadfast faith, gentle spirit, and enduring kindness touched everyone who knew her.
Mildred's warmth, strength, and compassion will remain forever in the hearts of all who loved her.
Our sincere thanks to ECU North Medical, Liberty Home Care, Rural Health, and the Veterans Administration for their exceptional kindness and services.
