Mildred Elizabeth Jacque, affectionately known as "Millie" sadly passed away on Sunday, October 19, 2025. She was born in
Rochester, New York on June 3, 1926, and was the youngest of three children born to Henry and Carolyn Washington. She was predeceased by her parents, sister Juanita, and brother Walter.
At an early age, Millie came unto Christ, joined, and was baptized Trinity Presbyterian Church. The church combined with Emmanuel Church and became Trinity Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in 1962. She served as an influential role model and dedicated decades to ministry as a member of The Voices of Peace Choir, the Usher Board, and in leadership roles as both Deacon and Elder. Her passion for music continued through her involvement in the St. John's Brickstone Chorale, where she performed for many years.
Millie attended and graduated from James Madison High School in
Rochester, NY. After completing high school, she attended Rochester Business Institute. Later she attended Monroe Community College where she received her Certificate of Completion with Distinction in Human Services in 1975 at the age of sixty-five. Millie was employed by the Monroe County Department of Social Services for 42 years.
Millie married the love of her life, Frederick Jacque. From this union, three children were born, Stephanie, Jeffrey, and Nancy, all of whom were shaped by the amazing example of love and devotion displayed by their parents for each other. They were married for over 30 years until his death in 1978.
Millie loved to travel and went on many cruises. Among the places she visited were Africa, China, Italy, England, Hawaii, Spain, and the Bahamas. She also went white-water rafting in Alaska at the age of seventy-five.
Millie was always a very social and active person. She belonged to many organizations and served on several boards. She was a volunteer at Highland Hospital and was a dedicated Poll Worker during Monroe County elections. She bowled in several bowling leagues and won many trophies. She took lessons and began playing golf in her late 70's. Millie was a member of the Red Hat Society's Sizzing Sisters Chapter in Rochester for 20 years and held the title of Lady June Bug. Other organizations that she belonged to included: New York Estella Chapter No. 7 Prince Hall Order Eastern Star; and the Veterans of Foreign War Auxiliary and Pennington Moye Auxiliary No. 9251. Millie was a trailblazer for St. John's Brickstone's marketing campaign for their new Independent Living Community.
Millie served for 49 years as Chairperson/Co-Chairperson of the committee responsible for bringing the Ebony Fashion Fair to the Rochester area.
On June 3, 2001, Millie received a proclamation from the Office of Mayor William A. Johnson, Jr., recognizing her seventy-fifth birthday, exemplary motherhood, community service, and steadfast Christian faith. In 2024 she was honored as a Living Legend during Brickstone's Women's Social Black History Month celebration. Most recently, she was recognized as a 2025 Honoree at the 27th Annual Clarissa Street Reunion, celebrated for her lifelong contributions and enduring legacy as a resident of historic Clarissa Street, whose presence has helped shape the heart of Rochester's Third Ward.
For 99 years, Millie maintained her sense of humor and poise. She had an unwavering faith, love for life, and dedication to her family. Millie leaves to mourn her three children, Stephanie, Jeffrey (Carol) and Nanc; three grandchildren, Shawn, Sonya and Janelle; seven great grandchildren, Zachary, Olivia, Nyaela, Shyloh, Kobe, Savaya and Shai; along with a host of other family and friends.
