Mildred Martin Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 1, 2025.
On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, God, in His infinite wisdom, gently closed the eyes of our beloved Mildred B. Martin, also lovingly referred to as "Millie" and "Nana."
Mildred was born June 17, 1945, to the late Janet Brown and Felix (Fred) Barr. She was one of seven children: Betty (deceased), Fred, Maryann, Verlie, Valerie, and George. Born in Florence, South Carolina, but moving to Philadelphia during her early years, Mildred was educated through the Philadelphia public school system.
She attended Edward W. Bok Technical High School and later received her associate's degree in business management from the Community College of Philadelphia. Mildred began her employment with the city of Philadelphia in 1969 and retired as a Courtroom Clerk after 26 years of dedicated service. Of the positions she held, Mildred was most proud of her position at the District Attorney's Office. After retiring from the city of Philadelphia, Mildred returned to her roots in Florence, South Carolina, where she was employed by Fleet Mortgage Company until 2006. Mildred held various clerical positions prior to officially retiring in 2008. She continued, however, to volunteer her services at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover, Delaware. She truly enjoyed helping people.
In 1983, Mildred married her soulmate, James A. Martin Jr., and the two became one. Jointly, they raised six children, Betty (deceased), Beverly, Donna, Erik, James the III, and Mia (deceased).
Mildred attended the Most Precious Blood Catholic Church and was a member of the Usher Board until she relocated to South Carolina in 1996. She and James moved to Dover, Delaware, in 2006 to be closer to family. While living in Delaware, she was a member of Crossroad Christian Church.
Mildred was most known for her big, beautiful smile. She was the voice of reason, offered support to many, and was the backbone of her immediate family. She loved being the center of attention and being spoiled by loved ones, with one of her favorite lines being "if you love me, you'd do such and such for me" but her most notable line was just one word "JIMMYYY". Mildred devoted her life to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and the community until she fell ill. She was most loved by those who knew her and will be greatly missed.
Mildred was preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Betty (Anthony, deceased), but leaves to mourn her children, Beverly (Lewis), Erik (Angelica), siblings, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
