POLAND — Mildred Kathryn McKeown, 97, fondly known as “Mookie,” passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at the Inn at Poland Way.

Mookie was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Youngstown, a daughter of M. James and Irene Gantley Boyle.

After graduating from South High School in 1944, she embarked on a career path that saw her serve as a telephone operator at Ohio Bell for five years and later at Southside Hospital for nine years.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Mookie found joy in being a member of Canfield AARP, Junior Seton Circle and various card clubs. Her altruistic spirit shone through her volunteer work at St. Paul’s in making pierogies. A passionate traveler, she explored far and wide. She had an unwavering support for the Cleveland Indians.

She is survived by her three daughters, Marsha (Stephen) Slivka of Austintown, Mary Beth (Michael) Conway of Boardman and Laurie (Edward) Megyesi of Boardman; sons, Timothy McKeown of Cincinnati and Thomas (Beth) McKeown of Lake Milton; nine grandchildren, Stephen (Lindsey) Slivka, Kate (Joe) Baker, Michael McKeown, Brianna (Peter) Szklarz, Brenna (Dave) Barton, Maura (Corbin) Donald, Heather (Josh) Boothby, Ryan (Erica) Megyesi and Allison Megyesi; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She married Eugene Clifford McKeown on May 14, 1949, and he preceded her in death on June 17, 1989.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Haas; and daughter-in-law, Virginia McKeown.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, 2726 Center Road.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at St. Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Parish in Boardman.
