A celebration of Mildred's extraordinary life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on June 17, 2025, at College Heights Baptist Church. She will be laid to rest at Fairlawn Cemetery in Chickasha, Oklahoma, under the direction of Sevier Funeral Home.
Mildred Charlene McMeans was born on September 29, 1920, in Okemah, Oklahoma, to William and Kate (Young) Reynolds. Mildred lived through more than a century of history-always with a sense of humor, a strong will, and a deep love for her family and community. She passed away in Chickasha, Oklahoma on Thursday, June 12, 2025, at the age of 104.
Mildred was a 1938 graduate of Weleetka High School. Growing up she loved to roller skate and enjoyed her agriculture classes in school which grew her love for plants and flowers. As a teenager, she worked at a local grocery store where she was told she could eat all the candy she wanted. That sweet deal couldn't hold her for long-Mildred had bigger dreams. She eventually decided to leave the store and after holding a few other jobs, decided to join the war effort. Mildred met a family traveling back to their home near Los Angeles, California and rode with them to San Diego. Once in San Diego she got a job as a parachute inspector and enjoyed swing dancing on the weekends. Her short stay in California extended to two years when she was introduced to an "Oklahoma boy" that was stationed there. On April 4, 1943, Mildred married Robert "Mac" McMeans, the love of her life, in San Diego and the pair headed back to Oklahoma in July of 1944. Together Mildred and Mac had a daughter, Melinda. As a family, they farmed near the Alex and the Lucille community.
Mildred embraced farm life and community involvement with enthusiasm. A devoted member of the Lucille Bluebonnet OHCE for over 70 years, she loved participating in OHCE events -especially the style shows, canning contests, and showcasing her beautiful flowers. In 2021, she was honored for her remarkable seven decades of membership. Mildred also loved working the election polls for over 20 years. She was an active member of the College Heights Baptist Church. Mildred was the 2010 Grady County Fair Honoree, and she loved helping her granddaughters Jamie and Amy and later her great grandsons Jackson and Karter with their fair exhibits. She was a master at completing those fair entry tickets. Mildred's passions were as varied as they were vibrant-she enjoyed ceramics, Scrabble, crossword puzzles, reading, and listening to Big Band records that reminded her of her dancing days. She had a sharp mind, a kind heart, and a laugh that could light up a room. She was, and always will be, remembered as a fun-loving and devoted Mom, Gram, Great Gram, Sister, Aunt, and friend. Her legacy of love, service, and joy lives on in everyone who knew her.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Robert McMeans; her parents, William and Kate Reynolds; her sister, Billie Cook; and her son-in-law, Jim Martin.
She is survived by her daughter, Melinda Martin of Amber, OK; her granddaughters Jamie Caves and husband Matt of Amber, OK, and Amy Hargis and husband Jeremy of Oklahoma City, OK; her great-grandsons Jackson and Karter Caves of Amber, OK, and Henry Hargis of Oklahoma City; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends.
