Plymouth – Mildred E. (Downie) Nicolas died peacefully, just shy of her 98th birthday, with her family at her side. Mildred was married to the late F. Edward Nicolas for 67 years.
Born in Medford, MA, daughter of the late Harry and Norma Downie, she graduated from Medford High School and worked in the local bank. She met her husband while they were both teenagers and were married after World War II. She raised five children and then went on to work for the Plimoth Patuxet Museum gift shop.
She is predeceased by her husband as well as her beloved son in law Dana Osborne and sister Marion Lohnes. She is survived by three daughters: Laurie Emery (Ken) of Colorado Springs, CO, Leslie Osborne of Calais, ME and Lenore (Amy Pinto) of Milford, CT; by two sons Christopher (Sheila) of Plymouth, MA and F. Edward, Jr. (Jan Freddino) of Bridgeport, CT. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Amanda Emery Botthof (Quinn), Alysia Emery Lowell (Ian), Dana Osborne, Jr. (Larissa), Nicole Osborne Bennett (Anthony), Francis Edward Nicolas, III and Sara Nicolas. In addition, she is survived by six great grandchildren: Cooper, Dana, Holly, Kobe, Remi and Zoey as well as her special friend and cribbage partner Midge and several cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the clinical team at Beacon Hospice.
Mildred lived her life with grace, gratitude and joy. She always chose to find the good in everyone and had a tremendous influence on many. She will be missed by all, but her influence of joy and humanity will be carried forward by her family, friends and all who she touched.
Mildred will be interred at the National Veterans Cemetery, Bourne, MA in a private service. Those who wish to honor her, may make a donation in her memory to Plimoth Patuxet Museum, Plymouth, MA or Old Colony Elder Services, Brockton, MA.
