Mildred S. "Millie" Strayer, 87, of Decatur, passed away Thursday morning, October 16, 2025, at Adams Woodcrest Assisted Living. She was born on March 13, 1938, in Decatur, IN, the daughter of Alfred and Ella (Selking) Grote. On October 14, 1961, Millie married Doyle Eugene Strayer and he preceded her in death on April 8, 2016.
She graduated from Decatur High School in 1956. Millie was a member of The Lighthouse Church in Monroe, where she was involved with the United Methodist Women and the Farm Wagon Food Pantry. She also helped prepare and serve funeral dinners for the church and for the Lions Club Dinners.
Millie was a lifelong homemaker and prior to that was a beautician for several years. She also volunteered and enjoyed doing hair for residents at the County Home.
She is survived by her daughters, Marilyn (Chris) Harvey of Decatur, IN and Sharon (Jeff) Lorenz of New Lenox, IL; 6 grandchildren, Lauren (Melvin) Susanto, Hannah (Victor) Landeros, Lucas Harvey, Jessica (Dan) O'Sullivan, Carissa Lorenz and Mark Lorenz; 3 great grandchildren, Mia Susanto, Ada O'Sullivan and Sophie O'Sullivan.
Millie was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Doyle Strayer; infant twin daughters, Kay & Fay; 3 brothers, Wilmer, Allen, and Marvin Grote; a sister, Ilo Schueler.
Visitation will be from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at Woodcrest Porter Auditorium and from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 24, 2025, at The Lighthouse Church in Monroe, with visitation prior to the service from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Pastor David Myers will be officiating and burial will follow in Tricker Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Woodcrest Assisted Living Steering Committee.
Arrangements are entrusted to Haggard-Hirschy & Zelt Funeral Home.
