Mildred Wall Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McCoy Funeral Home - Blacksburg from Jul. 24 to Jul. 28, 2025.
Mildred Smith Wall (MilMil, Nana), age 92, of Blacksburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 24, 2025. She was born in Radford, VA to the late William and Dana Smith. She was also preceded in death by her cherished husband Joseph A. Wall, grandaddy Ulysses Cole, beloved Aunt Bessie Cole, and son William T. Meredith (Bucky). Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law Mary and Andy Hall (Dublin), grandson Andrew Hall (Dublin), granddaughter Ashley Barber and husband Travis Barber (Roanoke), and her precious great-grandchildren Owen and Emerson Barber. She is also survived by her niece Allie Riffe (Narrows) and her family; stepson Jay L. Wall (Blacksburg); grandchildren Timothy, Adam, and Katie Wall; and special friends Bob Brown, Eddy Stephens, James and Mary Jo White, and Renie Price. She is also survived by her angel cat, Cindy - who was a loyal companion until the end. Mildred loved to tell people about walking to school at McGuffey School on the campus of Radford College and graduating from Radford High School in 1951. Her daddy worked for the railroad, and she grew up on the train. She rode back to Oakvale every year to spend her summer on the farm with her grandaddy and aunt - she loved to be out in the country. Her love of trains remained throughout her life, and she loved to tell the stories about all her train adventures. She was a proud Bobcat and enjoyed planning her class reunions and gathering with old classmates. She retired from Virginia Tech after 30 years of service and enjoyed to the fullest her golden years with Joe - traveling to many different places with friends, being an active member of the P. Buckley Moss society, volunteering at St. Michael's Lutheran church, and spending time with her treasured family. Since Joe's passing, her family spent every Sunday afternoon at her house visiting and eating lunch together, which brought her much joy. She loved vegetables from the garden, fresh fruit, anything chocolate - and her macaroni and cheese could not be beat. In her last weeks, she came to love popsicles and dubbed herself "the popsicle queen". The family would like to extend a special to thank you to Mildred's "girls" - Amber, Sarah, Haylee, and Crystal - who took such wonderful care of her at the end of her life and became part of the family - which allowed Mildred's final wish of remaining in her home until the end to come true. Family would also like to thank Carilion Hospice for their support. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at 2:00 pm in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Gary McCoy officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery, Blacksburg. The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, at McCoy Funeral Home prior to the service on Tuesday, July 29th. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in her honor to Micah's Backpack at St. Michael's Lutheran Church.
