Pembroke- Milton Dowd, age 86, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at his home under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. Mr. Dowd was born in Cobbtown, GA to the late Wallace and Ella Burns Dowd. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air National Guard. Mr. Milton was a truckdriver and later a supervisor with Overnight Transport for over 20 years. He was also owner, operator and electrician for Bryan Electric for over 20 years. He loved to hunt and fish and was the president of Dowd Hunting Club. Mr. Dowd was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, was an ordained honorary deacon of the church and was overseer of building and design at the church. He was a skilled builder and electrician and used his talents as a member of the Higher Call Builders. He went on many trips in Georgia and Kentucky to help build churches and social halls, while taking time to teach the youth his skills. He enjoyed traveling, especially in the Great Smokey Mountains and loved to attend bluegrass festivals.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Dowd was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Mrs. Mary Doris Hendrix Dowd; one son, Tommy Dwayne Dowd; one brother, Elmer Dowd and four sisters, Margaret Ward, Virginia Mosley, Jeanette Rich and Juanita Dowd.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Alice Dowd of Pembroke and Ronnie and Amanda Dowd of Blitchton; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Van Nubern of Pembroke; three brothers, James Dowd of Jacksonville, FL, Frank Dowd of Byron, GA and Wallace Dowd, Jr. of Blitchton; two sisters, Shirley Cribbs of Dublin and Mary Dowd of Hinesville; 10 grandchildren, Jessica Dowd Guilford, John Milton Dowd, Jr., Allan Harvey, Tracy Harvey, Kevin Wesley Dowd, Ashlee Amanda Dowd, Joshua Nubern, Tommy Dwayne Dowd, Mary Jane Dowd and Angie Powell and 20 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held 9-11 A.M. Saturday, October 26, 2024 at the funeral home
Funeral service will be held 11 A.M. Saturday, October 26, 2024 in the chapel of Flanders Powell Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Bryant and Rev. Wayman Duke officiating. Interment will follow in Bethany (Ellabell United Methodist) Cemetery.
