Milton Engel Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Louis Suburban Chapel - Fair Lawn on Apr. 26, 2024.
Full Name: Milton C. Engel
Date of Death: Thursday, April 25, 2024
With great sadness we announce the passing of Milton C. Engel, MD, 97, of Gilboa, NY, on April 25, 2024.
Milton was born on April 20, 1927 to Benjamin and Fannie Engel in Brooklyn, NY. Milton was a remarkable person who lived a very rich life up to the time of his passing at the age of 97. After losing his father at the age of 14, Milton worked various jobs to help support his family while studying. He attended Brooklyn Tech High School where he made lifelong friends. For college Milton attended New York University but had to pause while he enlisted in the Coast Guard during World War II. After the war he graduated from NYU and thereafter worked his way through Medical School at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. After graduation he completed his residency in internal medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and eventually opened a private practice in Manhattan, with an office on 5th Ave. Throughout his career he maintained a strong association with Mount Sinai Hospital and School of Medicine and volunteered as an Associate Clinical Professor to care for patients and train new physicians.
He met his wife Joyce, a nurse, while working at Long Island College Hospital. They eventually married and had three children together. Milton was a wonderful and caring person. He treated his patients like they were family and loved the practice of medicine until retirement at the age of 74. In his honor his patients and colleagues endowed the Milton C. Engel, MD, Award in Geriatric Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, which is awarded every year to top graduting medical students pursuing the field of Geriatric Medicine.
After retiring to Gilboa, NY, he and Joyce enjoyed the company of their neighbors, friends and family while also traveling the world. Milton especially loved giving lots of travel and food recommendations. Milton is preceded by his parents, Benjamin and Fannie, and his wife Joyce. He is survived by his three children, Andrew, Bradley and Nicole and seven grandchildren, Zachary, Danielle, Sarah, Raquelle, Betsy, Marcus and Ben.

Milt was my mentor, colleague and my pulmonary physician. He was the finest physician I've known in terms of ethics, empathy, brilliance of diagnostic skills and ability to focus on the patient. He once counseled me, "One can focus on the clock...or one can focus on the patient, but one can't focus on both!"
Milt was a mensch!! May his memory be a blessing!
