Miriam Walker Thornton, born on July 24, 1957, in Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully from natural causes on February 12, 2026, in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the age of 68.

Miriam was the youngest of five siblings and spent her formative years in Wilmington. She pursued higher education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she graduated with a degree in literature. Her passion for the written word was evident throughout her life, and she cherished the knowledge and insights that literature provided.

In her younger years, Miriam found joy and camaraderie on the tennis courts, a sport she loved dearly. Her affection for animals was well-known, and she shared her home with various beloved cats until her recent illness.

Miriam was a participant in the Club Nova mental health support program in Carrboro, where she found community and support. Her gentle spirit and kind heart touched many lives, and she will be remembered fondly by those who knew her.

She is preceded in death by her parents, William Holladay Thornton, Sr., and Frances Grainger Taylor Thornton, as well as her sister, Fannie Grainger Reece. Miriam is survived by her siblings, Bill Thornton, Jimmy Thornton, and Nancy Thornton, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
