Morris Dwight Mitchell, known affectionately-and almost exclusively-as Mo, set off on his final great adventure on January 27, 2026, fittingly the very day he turned 67. Born in 1959, beneath the wide-open skies of
Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, Mo lived a life every bit as colorful, unpredictable, and legendary as the name of his hometown. He passed away peacefully in
Clifton, Arizona, undoubtedly already spinning stories wherever he landed next.
Mo never met a stranger-just friends he hadn't entertained yet. His generous heart, quick wit, and restless sense of adventure defined him. A proud employee of FMI in Morenci, Arizona, Mo's coworkers knew that a day without his humor was a day noticeably dimmer. He didn't just tell stories-he pulled you into them, complete with dramatic pauses, side comments, and just enough exaggeration to keep you guessing. Life, to Mo, was meant to be lived fully and retold often.
Mo found the love of his life, his true partner in his devoted wife, Debra Mitchell, and together they raised a remarkable band of daughters: Cynthia Nissen, Sarah Mitchell, Dawnyea Luna, and Nicole Valley, all of whom inherited his generous spirit and flair for storytelling. With their instant bond, trusted friend, his brother, Henry "Hank" Luna. His capacity for love extended deeply to his brother and, Ronald Mitchell, his partner in mischief and whiskey. Mo is reunited with those who went ahead of him: his mother, Peggy Joanne Mitchell; his father, Covin Gerald Mitchell; his sister, Karen Sue Weems; and his cousin, Richard "Hymie" James Morris. And surely waiting front and center was Pontoon, his loyal dog, leading the welcoming committee with a wagging tail.
Mo had many passions: gun collecting, arrowhead hunting, Indian artifacts, a good glass of whiskey (especially when shared with brothers, Hank and Ronnie), and never passing up a chance to visit a casino. The Mitchell brothers were a mischievous pair, always ready for laughs, stories, and just a little trouble. Above all, Mo was a fierce protector of his family, a role he took most seriously after retirement-and one he carried with pride.
Mo was the definition of interesting. Generous to a fault, he would give you the shirt off his back-and likely follow it with an off-color joke just to make sure you were smiling. His legacy is one of laughter, love, and the gentle reminder not to take life too seriously.
In a world that can feel heavy, Mo was a beacon of light-encouraging us to chase adventure, collect stories, love fiercely, and give freely. As we say farewell to a man larger than life, we do so with smiles, laughter, and a little mischief in our hearts. Morris Dwight Mitchell- THE BEST FATHER- Mo to all who knew him-was truly one of a kind, and his story will be told, retold, and laughed through for generations to come.
And in true Mo fashion, we leave you with his favorite saying-one he lived by and delivered with a grin:
"You can't fix stupid. CHA-CHA-CHA."
Services for Mo are currently pending and will be announced at a later date.
