Mohabbat Ahmadi Obituary

Mohabbat Ahmadi, 45, passed away on Feb. 25, 2023, surrounded by family in his home town of Eslamabad e Gharb, Iran, after a long illness.

Mohabbat was born in Eslamabad e Gharb on Sept. 21, 1977, to Hamideh Bavandpouri and Mohammad Ali Ahmadi and was one of seven children. He came to Fairbanks via a long, winding path. He received a scholarship to attend the Petroleum University of Technology in Iran, where he received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in petroleum engineering. After working several years in industry, Mohabbat found that his true love lay in academia. To pursue this goal, he left his home and traveled halfway around the world to Austin, Texas, where he received his Ph.D. in petroleum engineering from UT Austin under Dr. Gary Pope. His next stop was Fairbanks, Alaska. Despite a job interview during an ice event that brought Fairbanks to a standstill, Mohabbat was undeterred. He accepted the job offer and joined the University of Alaska Fairbanks as an assistant professor in the Petroleum Engineering Department in January 2011.

Mohabbat was passionate about both teaching and research. His classes were often difficult, but his high expectations of his students were met by equally high expectations of himself. He always went the extra mile to explain difficult concepts and provide extra assistance where needed. The students recognized this dedication, three times naming him Outstanding Faculty.

Mohabbat was equally passionate about his research. His specialty was reservoir engineering, and he conducted research focused on improving our understanding and enhancing productivity of unconventional oil and gas reservoirs in Alaska. He happily worked with other disciplines to improve his understanding of these complex systems. In the process, he authored or coauthored dozens of professional papers and mentored over two dozen graduate students, many of whom went on to work in the Alaska oil industry.

Mohabbat was an incredibly positive and flexible person. Despite arriving in the darkest, coldest month of the year, he soon made himself at home in Fairbanks. He welcomed his wife, Bahareh, to Fairbanks in 2012. His daughter, Shler, was born at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital in 2014. Their home was always open to friends of all nationalities. Splendid Iranian dinners and passionate discussions ranging from the Islamic faith to national and international politics were the norm. Family trips to Anchorage, Valdez, Homer and Denali were highlights of their summers. Mohabbat realized a long-term dream when he became an American citizen in 2019.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Mohabbat and his family moved to Seattle so that he could be closer to medical care and his wife, Bahareh, could pursue her career. He continued to work remotely, teaching classes and conducting research until shortly before his passing.

Mohabbat will be greatly missed by his family, friends and colleagues for his incredible optimism, enthusiasm and passion for life.

He is survived by his wife, Zeinab Bahareh Barati, their daughter Shler, both of Seattle, Washington, and numerous family members in Iran. His many friends and colleagues here in the U.S. mourn his loss.

As a relative of Dr. Ahmadi, I spoke with him only once
But they taught me a great lesson in the first meeting
And that was that despite their high genius and special position they had, there was no arrogance and pride in their behavior.
I will always remember him as a good and perfect person and a legend of perseverance and hope.

May their souls be happy and their memories will be cherished forever

As a friend of Zeinab, I only had a few personal interactions with Dr. Ahmadi. But through the eyes of his wife I saw a compassionate, open-minded, gentle man who was committed to his family and his students. My thoughts and deeply felt wishes for peace go to his family, Namaste, Jane

As much as I respect Dr. Ahmadi as an educator, I also viewed him as a mentor. He gave thoughtful, measured advice, and always made time to help me. I would see Dr. Ahmadi around town with his family and around campus walking with his little daughter as she rode her bike, and it was clear he was a loving husband and a kind father. He was a person who was modeling the sort of behavior I aspired to. I had conversations with him about his faith, marriage, his experiences as a father, and what I might have to look forward to as a father in the future. I gained so much from Dr. Ahmadi, not just as a student, but as a fellow man. I am so grateful for how he has improved my life. He will be missed.

I was a MS student from 2015-2017 when I met him. He was also my thesis co-chair. I always remember him so fondly even though his classes were the toughest. He was a great teacher, his approach toward teaching student had only one motto-"Taking studnets to their highest peak of understanding and knowledge". His understandings in reservoir engineering was unmatched. I was TA for his reservoir engineering classes and learned a lot. His work will always be remembered and it is a great loss to the community May allah grant him Jannah.

He was a great professor loved by so many student. I was a petroleum engineering student at UAF 2013-2016, and still remember his classes and teaching. His class was the hardest but students knew he is a good professor and ,most of all,a good human. I am sad to hear his passing. I pray for his family members. Please stay strong !

When I think back to my Education at UAF and the many instructors that I had; Dr. Ahmadi is one of the first names and faces that come to mind. As an educator, Dr. Ahmadi held each and every one of his students to the highest of standards.

Of course when you're a student in these courses, it feels impossible to meet these academic standards; but looking back, Dr. Ahmadi's taught courses were the only courses in which I felt that I had become an intellectualy more capable person on my way out at the end of the semester than I was on my first day of class.

Dr. Ahmadi positively shaped the education, careers, and lives of those he taught as well as of those who practiced research under his guidance.

I can confidently proclaim that Dr. Ahmadi will be forever remembered by his former students as a passionate educator, a gifted scientist, and a principal architect for an entire generation of engineers.
