Mona Cofer Obituary

Mona Holbrook Cofer

Feb 17, 1940 - Jan 28, 2025

Mrs. Mona Holbrook Cofer, 84, of Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, January 28, 2025. She was born in Wilkes County on February 17, 1940, to the late William McKinley Holbrook and Alma Bauguess Holbrook. She grew up in Traphill, NC, and graduated from North Wilkes High School in 1959. Mrs. Cofer moved to Winston-Salem shortly thereafter, where she met her soulmate, Bill Cofer, whom she married in 1964.

Mrs. Cofer worked at various bookkeeping positions throughout her career, while raising two children. It was after this that she embarked on the mission of obtaining a bachelor's degree. She accomplished that goal while working full-time, in 2004, at the age of 64. After her beloved husband passed away in 2005, Mrs. Cofer focused on work and was employed as the Assistant to the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Forsyth Technical Community College until she retired at the age of 75. She spent her remaining years as a matriarch to all that knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cofer is preceded in death by her husband, William Lee Pennington Cofer; and son, Kelton Gray Cofer. Surviving are her son, Kursten Lee Cofer; wife, Heather; and granddaughter, Regan, of Chocowinity, NC; sister, Shelby Carroll and husband, Johnny, of Boone, NC; brother, Terry Holbrook and wife, Becky, of Lewisville; favorite niece and great-niece, Hollee Holbrook Harris and McKinley Harris of Farmington, NC; favorite nephew, Darren Church, of Conway, SC; and all her wonderful caregivers, other relatives and countless friends that were close to her heart, and are too many to name.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday at Salem Main Street Chapel, officiated by Pastor Reed Lawson. Interment will follow at Salem Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, January 31, 2025 at Salem Main Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her honor to any charity that aids wounded veterans, which is a cause she championed. Condolences may be made online at www.salemfh.com.

I was sorry to learn of Mona's passing. She was a fine lady and suffered much at the loss of her loving husband Bill and then later her devoted son Kelton. May the good Lord bless and keep her and may Mona rest in peace. Danny Ferguson

I had the pleasure of helping Mona as a caregiver. It wasn't long that my time with her developed into a wonderful friendship. She was a beautiful lady and we had so much fun together watching "our boys" on the many "Westerns" on INSP cable! She was delightful to be with and one in a million. Condolences to the family and a reminder we do not grieve as those that are without hope! One day...a great reunion.
