Mona Awbrey Gamble, 100, died peacefully surrounded by family on November 5, 2025. She was born on February 4, 1925, to Alfred Warner Awbrey and Willie Lula Cook Awbrey of the Texas community in Heard County, Georgia. Mona was head of her 1943 graduating class at Heard County High School. After graduation, she worked for Bell Bomber in Marietta until the end of World War II. For 39 years, Mona worked as a secretary for Callaway Mills and Milliken and Company. She retired at 69, as Executive Secretary to the President of Milliken LaGrange.
Mona married Horace Judson Gamble in 1945. They had three daughters: Georgia, Joan, and Deborah. Mona was a dedicated Christian, who seldom missed a church service. She taught Sunday School and served as church clerk for Southwest Baptist in LaGrange for over 50 years. She was a charter member of the Heard County United Daughters of the Confederacy, a member of the LaGrange Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a volunteer for Literacy Volunteers of America, and a past member of Professional Secretary International.
Upon retirement, Mona traveled to numerous countries, including England, France, Italy, Greece, the Panama Canal, and various locations in the Caribbean. In addition, she visited Alaska, Hawaii, and many states all over the US. Sisters, Pauline Brown Hicks, Hollis Crockett, and Norma Golden, accompanied her on many of the trips, and together the sisters made treasured memories.
She is survived by daughters: Dr. Georgia Evans (Terry) of Roopville; Joan Bradfield of Marietta; and Deborah Gamble of Roopville. Grandchildren: Dr. Cari Evans Low (Chris) of Salt Lake City, UT; Dr. Leigh Evans Whitton (Chris) of Sharpsburg, GA; Will Bradfield (Jordon) of Birmingham, AL; Ben Bradfield (Rachel) of Alpharetta, GA; and Simone Acosta of Princeton, NJ. Great granddaughters: Annabelle Low, Josie Low of Salt Lake City, UT; Claire Whitton of Sharpsburg, GA; and Bridget Bradfield of Birmingham, AL. She is survived by one sister, Norma Awbrey Golden of Cartersville, GA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mona was preceded in death by Horace in 1983, a son-in-law, William Thomas (Bill) Bradfield, in 2025; her parents; and numerous siblings.
A celebration of life will be held with a graveside service on Monday, November 10, 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Glenn Independent Methodist Church, 4460 Liberty Hill-Glenn Rd. Franklin, GA 30217. Visitation will occur in the church for one hour before the service (10:00 – 11:00 AM). Will Bradfield, Ben Bradfield, Chris Whitton, and Warner Golden will be pallbearers.
Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation and admiration to the Vernon Woods Retirement Community staff, who embraced Mom and loved her like their own. A special thanks also goes to Wellstar Hospice for their support during her last few days.
