Mona Peach McCarn

Friends and family of Mona Peach McCarn, another angle went to heaven on July 5, 2021. She was born to Wilfred Peach and Elsie (Bouchard) Peach in Arnold's Cove, Newfoundland on July 11, 1930. She is survived by sisters; Suzanna (Boutcher) Peach, Rita (Slade) Peach and brothers; Frank Peach, Otto Peach, and Fred Peach.
My father, Bert Dawson and Theodore (Mac) McCarn, I always knew him as Mac, were stationed on the same ship here in Charleston, SC. My dad invited Mac, his wife Mona and their son Dale to my 1st birthday party and we have been family ever since.
Almost 2 years later the next duty station would be Dunoon, Scotland. The ship went to its destination but dependents couldn't follow because of conflict with Cuba. Mona and Dale moved in with my mom; Claire Dawson, brothers; Teddy Dawson and Eddie Dawson, and myself; Cyndi Kershaw. Mona took care of me while my mom worked, we all know how she loved babies. After the Cuban Missile Crisis we went and got our passports and flew to Scotland.
Years later my family and the McCarn's, Benton's and Smith's, 2 other military families that are "family" to us, all retired here in Charleston.
Our families would get together on week-ends and such, I recall Dale, Eddie and Teddy going to the wresting events at County Hall, downtown Charleston. In my young days, Mona would watch me sometimes. I loved to use her buffer and get her wood floors shiny and eat her homemade pea soup, yum! One day, I had the hiccups and couldn't get rid of them. Mona told me "I'm going to tell your mom what you did". I got so worried about what she was going to tell my mom, it scared the hiccups out of me. And Mona tells me that's why she said that, she wasn't telling my mom anything.
Mona moved from Charleston to Alabama and lived with her sister, Mabel (Cockran) Peach and her family in Alabama and my parents relocated to Virginia. In 1992 during a visit to Charleston, my dad had an aneurysm and had emergency surgery at Roper St. Francis hospital. Mom immediately transferred to Charleston and was at the hospital every day. During this time Mona's sister Mabel passed away and I'll make a long story short, Mona moved back to Charleston to live with my mom and help with the care of my dad. It was a benefit and blessing for both of them, which was almost 30 years ago.
Mona was known for her love of babies and children, knowing everyone's birthday, find a word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, knitting wonderful dish cloths and scarfs, her famous "Baked Beans", and her witty sense of humor. I remember I had my Mom and Mona over for a Mother's Day brunch and I was serving Screw drivers for our beverage. As I handed Mona her drink she commented "this is the only way I'm going to get screwed", lol.
