Monte Ward Obituary

Monte Ward

Born: January 15, 1947 |

Monte James Ward was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 4, 2026. He was a devoted father, faithful husband, and loyal friend. Monte is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Ward, daughter Michelle Swiney (Doug), son Josh Ward (Kellie), stepson Matt Hagaman (Kelli) and stepdaughter Melissa Granju (Chris).

Monte was born on January 15, 1947, in Johnson City to James Y. Ward and Mildred Christine Horton Ward. He spent his youth there before moving to Maryville, where he graduated from Everett High School in 1965. Following graduation, Monte proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. Guided by a deep love for his country and a strong desire to serve his community, he later became a firefighter with the Alcoa Fire Department. During his career, he rose to the rank of Captain, forged lifelong friendships, and mentored younger firefighters. Even after retirement, Monte could often be found stopping by the fire hall to visit "the guys."

Monte's greatest joy was his family. He was married to the love of his life, Marilyn, for 35 years. They did everything together, from weekly dinner dates to "just one more" sewing shop stop. Monte never stopped courting her, sending flowers, opening doors, and cherishing their time together.

Monte and Marilyn have been long-time members of East Maryville Baptist Church, even having their own "unofficial" reserved seats each Sunday, a tradition that continues with Marilyn.

A loving and steady father, Monte provided his children with a strong, safe presence. He taught them respect, integrity, and responsibility, and took pride in guiding them through life's milestones, teaching them to ride bikes, drive cars, and encouraging them as they built families of their own. He was known for making sure his kids were always taken care of, often sending them off with a smile and a little "walking around money." Monte loved sharing stories and photos of his children and grandchildren. Affectionately known as "Papaw" Monte and "Pop-Pop," he found immense joy in his grandchildren: Kayla, Chad, Owen, Max, Nora, Andrew, Jack, and Nick and great grandchildren: Cheyenne and Colton.

Beyond his immediate family, Monte was blessed with a wide circle of friends and extended family. Many proudly called him their best friend, friendships that spanned more than 60+ years. He never met a stranger and rarely left the house without running into someone he knew. Monte looked forward to weekly breakfasts with friends, loved cheering on the Tennessee Vols, telling stories and jokes, and engaging in thoughtful conversations about politics and faith, always with respect for differing opinions (most of the time).

Monte lived a life guided by faith, devoted to loving, serving, and protecting others. His impact was immeasurable, and he was deeply loved. He will be missed by many.

As the family grieves, they welcome the sharing of favorite memories as they remember and celebrate Monte's life. Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 PM, Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at East Maryville Baptist Church. Celebration of Life will be at 6:00 PM with Rev. Keith Johnson officiating. Condolences may be shared at Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, Maryville, 865-983-1000, www.SmithFuneralandCremation.com.
