Rocky Mount, North Carolina,

Mr. Melvin L. Bynum, Sr. 86, of Rocky Mount, North Carolina transitioned on August 7, 2025 at his residence.

Melvin L. Bynum, Sr. was born February 3, 1939 to the late Wardell and Annie Mae Bynum of Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Melvin was one out of 13 children. He was preceded in death by Naomi Green, Hazel Harrison, Dorothy Thorne, Lula Ricks, Merilina Bynum, Lynwood Bynum, and Wardell Bynum.

Melvin married his wife Edna, and out of that union were 5 children. They have been married for 66 years.

In 1961 Melvin moved from North Carolina to Newark, New Jersey where he began his career with Accurate Products Company of Hillside, New Jersey. Melvin's hard work landed him a position as a shop welder where he worked for 40 years.

Melvin has always been involved in community service and it was very important to him. While living in Newark, New Jersey a block association was formed and Melvin was elected as President. Later he moved to Scotch Plains, New Jersey where he was instrumental in the rebirth of the Jerseyland Park Community Center (JPCC) and became Vice President. The Jerseyland Park Community Center serves as a recreational center for the black community of Scotch Plains, New Jersey. With Melvin's help and others the JPCC provided scholarships for college bound students, job seminars, awareness programs, and senior citizens programs. His tireless efforts awarded him "Man of the Year" from the Board of Trustees.

However, the most important thing to Melvin was family. Family was everything. He always cared about everyone he encountered. What mattered most to him was showing love, unity and support. Melvin will always be remembered by his humble spirit, his great wisdom, and kind heart. Those of you who knew Melvin, know that while he may have moved to a new address, (Heaven) he will forever be remembered in our hearts. You are now safe in God's arms! You fought a good fight.

He leaves to cherish his wife, Edna, his children, Towana Gail Brown, Melvin Bynum Jr.(Nancy), Leander Jones(Josephine), Melissa Murrell, Anita Bynum, Erinn Griggs, 11 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, his siblings, Bishop Moore Bynum (Shernette), Jean Bynum, Sarah Bynum, and Sandra Green, Ethel Best, a host of other relatives and friends.

A visitation for Mr. Bynum will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, with the funeral service following the visitation, beginning at 11:00 am, on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at Greater Mount Hermon Baptist Church located at 801 Branch Street in Rocky Mount NC. The interment will take place immediately following the service in the Gardens of Gethsemane Cemetery in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

These professional services have been entrusted to H D Pope Funeral Home, 325 Nash Street, Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
