Myrtie Sue Powell Cowart, 86, of Winterville, GA, passed away to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 6, 2025. Born in Franklin County, she was the second child of the late Benjamin Franklin Powell and the late Mary Sue Smith.
A woman of independence, in her final years, Myrtie was gently cared for by her daughter, Denise, whose love and attentiveness surrounded her with comfort.
An attendee of Athens High School, Myrtie spent over forty years working as a skilled seamstress. Most notably with Stitch Craft and Thomas Textile. Later in life, she opened her own business, manufacturing and supplying plumbing materials to companies throughout North Georgia.
At home, she was a woman of many talents. She was an exceptional cook—especially famous for her unforgettable bundt cakes—and enjoyed crocheting, solving word puzzles, watching game shows, keeping a spotless home, and collecting her cherished “pretties.” Her home was always warm, inviting, and filled with the coziness she lovingly created.
She dedicated her life to caring for her family—children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren—with unwavering love and strength, essentially raising entire generations. As the heart and matriarch of her family, affectionately known as “The Queen,” she loved deeply, had the kindest soul, and touched everyone she met with her warmth, generosity, and grace. Caring for others was not just something she did; it was who she was. Her devotion extended to her brother, Donald, whom she lovingly cared for over the course of twenty years. She was truly loved by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Aside from her parents, Myrtie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 30 years, Luther William “Billy” Cowart; her longtime companion, Tyrone Ard “Tony” Hightower; her sister, Rhonda Kay Smith; her son, Gregorie Allen Cowart; and her daughter, Gwendolyn Diane Willingham.
Myrtie is survived by her loving family: daughter, Denise Epps (Bruce); son in law, Dennis Willingham; her grandchildren, Melissa Hull (Kieser), Michael Epps, Amanda Ross (Darius), Amy Ogle (Michael), Janet Compton (Benji), Russell Cowart, Mathew Cowart, Crystal Wynkoop, and Tara Willingham; great-grandchildren, Tyler Ramsey (Alexandra), Braylon Hull, Kyson Hull, Kiley Epps, Jayden Halsey-Ross, Kingsley Ross, Emery Ross, Alyssa Cheek, Alexis Cheek, Emmaleigh Ogle, Danielle Prussia, Jordan Compton, Brantly Cowart, Colton Cowart, Heather Witt, Dimitri Witt, Alister Witt, Ariana Haley, and Tarick Willingham; along with 5 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers, Harold Powell (Shirley), Donald Powell, Merle Powell (Judy), and Ronnie Smith, as well as her sister Barbara Farmer. She leaves behind many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will forever cherish her memory.
Myrtie’s legacy is one of wisdom, peace, and steadfast love—qualities beautifully captured in Proverbs 3:15-18. For all she was to us, and all she will remain in our hearts, we turn to the words that reflect her so beautifully:
She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; Those who hold her fast will be blessed.
The family will receive guests on Monday, December 15, 2025, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Lord and Stephens, East. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Myrtie Cowart, officiated by Danny Gorman, will follow, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Park after the service.
