Myrtle Ann Bush, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 12, 2026, in
Newport News, Virginia, at the age of 93. Born on January 23, 1933, in
Gloucester, Virginia, she lived a life full of love, dedication, and resilience.
Myrtle was the cherished daughter of the late Willie Brown and Lelia Holmes. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 28 years, Andrew L. Bush Jr., her dear daughters Cheryl Bush and Shirley Shackleford, her sister Ethel Brown, her brothers Russell Brown and Robert Brown, and her grandson Rusty Shackleford.
A proud graduate of Gloucester Training School, Myrtle was a woman of strong faith and an active member of First Baptist Church in Ordinary, Virginia. Her early career as a school crossing guard in Philadelphia demonstrated her commitment to the safety and well-being of children. Later, she dedicated herself to being a homemaker, where she found joy in nurturing her family and home.
Myrtle had a passion for gardening, tending to her flowers, vegetables, and fruit trees with care and enthusiasm. Her garden was a testament to her love for nature and her feisty spirit. Above all, she was a loving and caring mother and grandmother, always active and involved in the lives of her family members.
She is survived by her son, Andrew L. Bush III, and his wife Katrina; her grandchildren, Tara Bush, Andrew L. Bush IV (Janelle), Tatyona Bush, Toni Sankofa (Leon), Darryl Shackleford, and Blair Bush; and 12 great-grandchildren. Myrtle also leaves behind a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss her dearly.
A celebration of Myrtle's life will be held on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home - Denbigh Chapel. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a remarkable woman whose legacy of love and strength will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Myrtle Ann Bush will be remembered for her unwavering devotion to her family, her vibrant spirit, and her enduring faith. She touched the hearts of many and will be deeply missed.
