Myrtle Jean Hampton Whitby, a beloved mother, grandmother, and pillar of faith, transitioned from this life on October 1, 2025, at the age of 92. She was born on November 17, 1932, to the late James Hampton and Claudine Bundy Hampton. Myrtle was united in marriage to the love of her life, Floyd D. Whitby, who preceded her in death in 1983. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on love, faith, and family. A proud graduate of Father King School, Myrtle valued education and community. She was raised in the Christian faith and was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church, where she found strength, peace, and purpose throughout her life. In addition to being a devoted homemaker, Myrtle found great joy in gardening and working in her yard, nurturing beauty around her home just as she did in the lives of those she loved. She enjoyed word puzzles, often using them as a fun and educational tool to teach her grandsons, "TJ" and "JJ," how to recognize letters and discover new words. Myrtle also loved cooking, laughing, and spending quality time with her family, and her home was always filled with warmth, joy, and the comforting aromas of home-cooked meals. Myrtle was the devoted mother of three children: Bernardine Witherspoon, Regina Whitby, and LaTwon (Evetta) Whitby. She also lovingly raised several nephews as her own, and her heart and home were always open - her nurturing spirit touched the lives of many. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd D. Whitby; her sister, Alma Dean Hampton Taylor; and nephews George Hampton, Stanley Hampton, Larry Hampton, and Larnell Taylor, whom she lovingly raised as sons. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Bernardine Witherspoon, Regina Whitby, and LaTwon (Evetta) Whitby; her grandchildren, Tajuan Whitby and Jayjuan Whitby; her sister, Cheryl Hampton Wicks Coleman; her nephew, James Hampton; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives, church family, and friends who will forever hold her close in their hearts. Myrtle will be remembered for her unwavering faith, boundless love, and the profound impact she made on everyone who knew her. Her legacy of kindness, strength, and devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends for generations to come.
