Mack J. Whitby, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on October 5, 2025, in Hampton, VA, at the age of 76. Born on November 17, 1948, in Yorktown, VA, Mack lived a life full of dedication, passion, and love.
A proud graduate of James Weldon Johnson High School's class of 1966, Mack was not only an outstanding student but also an Allstar High School Football Player, showcasing his remarkable athletic talent. Following his education, he went on to serve his country with honor as a U.S. Army Veteran, exemplifying bravery and commitment.
After his military service, Mack embarked on a long and fulfilling career as a pipefitter at Newport News Shipyard, where his hard work and skill were highly regarded. Beyond his professional endeavors, Mack was a man with diverse interests that brought joy to his life and those around him.
Mack's love for fishing took him to serene waters, where he found peace and contentment. An avid guitarist and music lover, he filled rooms with melodies and rhythms that resonated with his soul. He was passionate about archery and karate, activities that reflected his disciplined and adventurous spirit. A dedicated fan of the Dallas Cowboys, he never missed a game, always cheering enthusiastically for his favorite team.
Mack had a zest for life, especially when it came to dancing. His energy on the dance floor was infectious, leaving lasting memories for all who danced alongside him. His faith kept him rooted, as a devoted member of Morning Star Baptist Church in Williamsburg, VA, where he found community and solace.
Preceded in death by his late wife, Louise Whitby; his mother, Rosa Lee Carter; his brothers, Robert, Arthur, and Donald Whitby; and his granddaughter, SGT Sequoia Jones, US Army, Mack leaves behind a legacy of love and resilience.
Cherishing his memory are his daughter, Reba Jones, and her husband David Jr.; his siblings, Shirley Wright, Leola Whitby, Lee Whitby, Beatrice Whitby, John Whitby, Annie Taylor, Dixie Whitby, Kathy Turner and her husband Kevin, Richard Whitby, and Delores Mooring. He is also survived by his five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Mack J. Whitby's life was a testament to strength, joy, and kindness. His unwavering spirit and love for those around him will continue to inspire everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. May his memory be a blessing and his life an inspiration to all.
