Nancy Barnes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Richardson's Benson Mortuary from Aug. 7 to Aug. 8, 2022.
Nancy Louise Barnes, a born leader with a passion for education, selfless service, and a patriotic duty to serve her Nation, passed peacefully at home with her husband and son by her side on July 28, 2022, in Sierra Vista, AZ.
Nancy was born November 16, 1946, to Sylvio Louis Fournier and Georgette Blanche Fournier (Bazinet) of Lewiston, ME. Nancy grew up in a close-knit French-Canadian family. She attended Catholic Schools and graduated from St. Joseph's College in 1968 (a female only college at the time). Nancy loved the outdoors and sharing that love with others. She was a Girl Scout, Jr. Maine Guide, and Camp Counselor throughout her school years. Nancy was an English teacher at Richmond High School after college and she taught English in Osaka, Japan for a couple of years after that.
Nancy started her Successful Career working for the government at the Military Intelligence School, Ft Devens, MA. While enjoying a day at Mirror Lake Recreation Area in 1974 on Ft. Devens she met a Green Beret named Sherman Leroy Barnes. She would spend the rest of her life with Sherman. They married in 1975 and adopted John Joseph Barnes in 1980. Nancy earned a master's degree in Education from Fitchburg State University, and she received many awards and accolades throughout her professional career. Nancy Retired at Ft. Huachuca, AZ. after 30 years of service and she retired as a GS-14 (Equivalent to a General).
Nancy was outgoing, friendly, and always had a pleasant demeanor. Nancy never met a stranger and would often run into old friends in the most random places. Nancy was an amazing cook, and she had a passion for the culinary arts. Nancy was especially skilled at confections and deserts. She was known as, "The Mom you want to make Whoopie Pies with".
Nancy's number one priority in her life was her family. She attended every game, event, and activity. She was involved in Scouting and taught Sunday School. She really loved RVing with her family. She was always ready to take off in the RV at a moment's notice.
When Nancy retired, she truly loved spending every day with her Husband, Sherman. They were very active and took daily walks at Sierra Vista Mall. Nancy and Sherman traveled to the Coast of Maine every summer with their beloved dog, Brandy. Nancy enjoyed playing Kegon with her friends and swimming at The Cove in Sierra Vista. Nancy had an active social life and enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.
Nancy always went above and beyond to help those around her. She helped countless people and touched many lives. Nancy loved to hear when her colleagues' received promotions and awards. Nancy was known to be an excellent Boss and great to work for.
Nancy had a wonderful and fulfilling life. Nancy's husband Sherman loved and adored her every moment of their 48-year marriage. Nancy is survived by her husband Sherman Barnes, her son John Barnes, her grandson Hunter Francis, her sister Sylvia Turgeon, and a host of other family and friends.
Nancy Louise Barnes will be remembered for her radiant smile, devotion to her family, loyalty to her friends, duty to her Nation, and her great sense of humor. Nancy's courageous determination, graceful confidence, and personal achievements are Legendary. May you Reside in Paradise Nancy.

I have too many wonderful memories of my times with Nancy. She was so loving and caring of me and others. She brought a special kind of light into this world. I will miss her always and the laughs and secrets and fun we shared.

I thought dearly of my friend and finally located her to reach out and say hello and thank you for the love shown when we were at Fort Devens. I was saddened to read of her death; however, absent on earth, present with our Lord and Savior. I feel sad for Sherman, her loving and supportive husband. He should know she´s with our Lord now and that should provide immense comfort, even though it´s devastating to lose Nancy. I wish the family Peace, and love
of Jesus Christ. Their son John, I´m sure, already knows how blessed he is. Diane Lovett Lewis
