Nancy Rose (McDonough) Bergman was born August 4th, 1950, to Charles “Mac” Francis McDonough and Claire Ann (Blanchette) McDonough residing in Philadelphia, PA. Her family moved to Montclair, New Jersey while Nancy was in grade school to accommodate their growing family and her father's career change. Nancy was the third child of 7 (Suzanne Kircher, Lucy LeMay (Steve), Charles McDonough (Indira), Pauline McDonough, James McDonough (Valerie), Barbara Schwab (Dave)) and thoroughly enjoyed growing up in a large busy household. Her brothers and sisters share countless endearing stories of fun and mischief, including a standoff with her mother in the backyard! She had a special relationship with each of them. Nancy emulated her parents' love for one another and often recounted how they danced together while doing the dishes and their children cleared the table. Nancy’s parents valued education, her father an engineer for Boeing and mother a trained Nurse, become homemaker. She attended and graduated from catholic school at Immaculate Conception High School. After graduation, she worked and attended courses at The New York City Foundling Home, one of New York City’s oldest and largest child welfare agencies as a childcare technician.

Nancy met her husband, David Bergman of Appleton, MN while he was serving in the U.S. military, army branch. David was training at Fort Monmouth in New Jersey at the time. His training involved working on equipment utilized during code deciphering in the Vietnam and Korean conflicts. While at Fort Monmouth, they enjoyed attending social events together with friends, their love blooming while dancing. After David returned from his deployment to Korea, the two were wed at The Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Montclair, New Jersey and moved to Appleton shortly after.

Upon moving, Nancy worked at the Appleton Hospital as a nursing assistant, and Dave worked for Orton's Hardware while training to become a plumbing/heating/HVAC repair and installation contractor. Together, they started their family and had three children together : Charles Bergman (Shelly) of Sioux Falls, Kelly Hauck (Jay) of Sioux City, and Theresa Schriener of Eagan. While performing multiple jobs and raising their busy children, Dave and Nancy purchased a plumbing business, which would soon become Bergman’s Plumbing and heating. David and Nancy owned and operated this business, serving all the communities in and around Appleton for 35 years. While balancing office duties, managing business and personal finances, and raising their children, Nancy also enjoyed working as an EMT for the local Ambulance department and all the excitement that entailed.

As their children grew, Nancy committed much of her free time to volunteering for The Girl Scouts, church functions, and local art programs. She also found time to devote to hobbies she relished, especially swimming, book club, Homemakers club, travel, card clubs, gardening, and art. She spent countless weekends and vacations camping with family and friends, delighting in the many lakes Minnesota had to offer; Most especially her time at Barsness Park near to Glenwood. Together, Nancy and Dave traveled to nearly every state and many countries, including Canada, Mexico, The Bahamas, and Norway.

After retirement, Nancy spent much of her time devoted to her children’s growing families. Traveling to watch countless sporting, music and dance events across the states and occasionally managing their homes to give busy parents a break. Dave and Nancy have 7 grandchildren (Nicolet Schriener, Alexis Schriener (Miguel), Chloe Valdez, Amber and Jacob Bergman, Aidan and Alexander Hauck) and 7 great-grandchildren (Maci, Miya, Mitchell, Marley, Maleia, Mac, and Emmy) who each bring them extraordinary happiness.

Throughout her life, watercolor artistry was Nancy’s passion. She could be found painting, teaching, submersing herself in classes, or curating her artwork on a daily basis. Nancy displayed her artwork for years across the state at successful art fairs often alongside her artist sister Lucy. Nancy and Lucy attended many art courses together, creating life-long friendships and occasionally yakking-it up in their own language and jokes in class! Nancy’s artwork came to life at the Appleton Art and Culture center this past month for its final year, a 14-year love affair with the Upper Minnesota River Art Crawl: Meander.
