Obituary
Nancy D. (Bumstead) Carlson, age 90, passed away on Thursday morning, July 27, 2023 in Newaygo, Michigan. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and loved ones were by her side, loving her through her passing. Nancy was born on January 15, 1933 in Muskegon, Michigan to Marion Clark Bumstead and Gladys Odessa (Tufts) Bumstead. On August 1, 1952 she married Kenneth R. Carlson, the "love of her life". Nancy was a life member of the Newaygo Congregational United Church of Christ. In her early years she worked as a secretary, and then homemaker as her family grew. Nancy served the Newaygo Public Schools as a bus driver, and retired after many years in that service. She found joy in sewing, china painting, traveling, and taking on a good project. Her gift was in the kitchen. She loved canning and cooking, feeding her family, many friends, and many large groups. With a desire for service to others, and with her gift of hospitality, she helped many in her community however that help was needed. "Chig", as she was called by her grandchildren, will always be remembered by them for not only loving them well, but also for the many road trips, camping trips, and crafting projects she took on with them. "Chig" made sure to have relationships established with her great-grandchildren, who knew her and loved her well. Nancy deeply loved her parents and siblings, and they her. She fondly often recalled the fun she had with each of them. The sisters enjoyed their annual "sister's trip", which sometimes included long lost sister "Stilla". Nancy was the eldest of five children, all who survive her: Wayne Bumstead, Marian (Phil) Knapp, Linda (Joe) Andrejczak, Steve (Candi) Bumstead. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Chuck (Becky) Carlson. "Aunt Nancy" is loved and fondly remembered by her nieces & nephews. "Chig" is also survived by 3 children, 11 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren: Fritz (Nancy) Carlson of Newaygo, Michigan and their children Eric & Kelsey Carlson – Blake & Nora, Brian & Niki Carlson – Clark & Walter, Sarah & Jordan VandenBosch – Wade; Mitzi (Carlson) Beckman and Henk Knevelbaard of Huntington, Indiana and her children Allen & Katy Beckman, Brittany Beckman & Joe Weinstein – Sayla & Joey, Mikal Beckman & Jeff Merchant – Rudi & Atlantis, Mackenzie Beckman & Jacob Hosman; Max (Kris) Carlson of Fremont, Michigan and their children Laura & James Yon, Erin & Anthony Rodriguez – Ryann, Alee, Valor, & Hope, Lisa & Adam Kokx – Oliver, Alden, & Emmett, Matthew Carlson & Chase Fitzpatrick. Nancy was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ken Carlson on October 26, 2010; youngest son Clark Carlson on November 6, 1995; sisters-in-law, Jean Bumstead & Eileen Fuller; and brothers-in-law, Doug Saur & Cliff Carlson. The Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, July 30, 2023 at Newaygo Congregational United Church of Christ with Rev. Jonathan Riedel officiating. Interment will be in Garfield Township Cemetery. Visitation will also be at the church from 2-3 PM on Sunday. Suggested Memorial: Newaygo Congregational United Church of Christ.
