Nancy was born in Pitt County on April 15, 1950; the daughter of the late James Quinton and Margie Dean Brooks Langley. One of four children she spent the majority of her life in Pitt County where she attended Winterville and Pactolus elementary schools, graduating from Belvoir Falkland High School in 1968. She went on to enroll in a number of accounting classes at Pitt Community College. In September 1969 she married the love of her life, Edward and in 1973 they had one daughter, Jennifer, together. Growing up she attended the Missionary Baptist Church, Pactolus; where she was baptized in 1962. She and her family had attended both the First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Greenville and Kings Crossroads Free Will Baptist Church in Fountain, NC; where she taught Sunday school for a period of time. She and her family attended church often until her husband was diagnosed with cancer in 1996. Following his death in 2006 and after her own health became a concern in 2014, Nancy moved into the home with her daughter and she was currently living in Tarboro, Edgecombe County. She was a present member of the First Baptist Church of Tarboro, NC. Nancy worked as an Inventory Control Clerk for Grady White Boats, Office Manager for Michelle Arrowood Interior Designs, Comptroller for Ferguson Enterprises, and Office Manager at Greenville Family Doctors; where her work ethic was impeccable.
Aside from God and family, which were first and foremost, she was a Family Genealogist and History enthusiast. Her Scottish ancestry reverts back to her 9th great-grandfather who was brought to Martha's Vineyard in 1650 as a prisoner of war during the Scottish Rebellion, following the Battle of Dunbar. She was deeply dedicated to and completely responsible for the installation of countless government issued grave markers designating the final resting place of military veteran graves. Having placed Memorial Headstones on her Mexican American War ancestors' graves, she was recognized for her efforts in an article which was originally printed in the Daily Reflector. The article was picked up by the Associated Press then published in various newspapers nationwide. She recently placed an ancestral headstone in the Confederate section of the historical Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Va.
She and her late husband were greatly immersed in Civil War History and reenactments. She felt extremely privileged to be able to honor all US Military veterans and their services to this country. She supported the Honor and Remember Flag being flown as a national emblem and she was a member of the Gold Star Wives of America, Inc., She was a member of Descendants of the Mexican War Veterans, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy and the NC Society Order of Confederate Rose. She was a life member of Pitt County Historical Society and she had served on the executive board of Pitt Co. Family Researchers for a number years. A considerable amount of her documented virtual genealogy work is attainable online at https://www.tribalpages.com Pioneers, Portals and Paths; a family website she created and maintained since 2001. In July 1969 Nancy gave birth to a beautiful baby girl whom she placed for adoption. It was her love for family, history and genealogy which would ultimately reunite her with her first born child, after 50 years, thru corresponding DNA.
In addition to her love of history she enjoyed collecting antique photography. She collected and refurbished 19th-century antique gesso frames. Moreover, she was an autonomous self-described contemporary wildlife and landscape photographer; she loved sun rises, sun sets and everything in-between. She loved traveling all over the county with her husband and a Grand Canyon flyover excursion was one of her most unforgettable photo opportunities. Her camera was within easy reach each and every time she left home. She was a life supporter of the Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park in Scotland Neck, where she enjoyed much of her wildlife camera work. More recently, her daughter Jennifer has been her most willing and enthusiastic chauffeur. Both Nancy and her husband received a Certificate of Recognition for their time and dedication in assisting those affected by the 1999 Hurricane Floyd disaster. She was an accomplished seamstress; she enjoyed a variety of crafts; painting ornamental figurines was a favorite, At times she enjoyed putting puzzles together or sometimes reading a good book. Nancy was a very generous and caring individual. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was dedicated to her family and their ancestral heritage and believed "It is a revered thing to see an ancient castle not in decay, but how much more it is to behold an ancient family which has stood against the ways and weather of time" ` Sir Francis Bacon
