Hall-Wynne Funeral Service & Crematory - DurhamNancy C. Tomkovick, 74, died on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at her home in Chapel Hill, NC. She was born June 27, 1951, in Pittsfield, IL, to the late Charles H. Coultas and Nina M. Smith Coultas.
She graduated from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 1973 with a degree in biology and later obtained her Masters of Library Science from NC Central University in 1998.
After raising her daughter, she had a fulfilling career as a media coordinator in the North Carolina public schools from 2000-2016, when she retired.
For 35 years, she was a dedicated member of the North Carolina Extension & Community Association (formerly known as the Extension Homemakers Association), Antioch branch.
Nancy is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Jack Tomkovick; daughter, Jessica Janecki and son-in-law, Danny of Durham, NC; sister, Grace Elliott of Glen Rose, TX; and sister-in-law, Julie Tomkovick of Chapel Hill, NC.
In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her sister, Phyllis Minear; brothers, Bill Coultas, Leroy Coultas, and Levoy Coultas; brothers-in-law, John Elliott and Dr. Chuck Tomkovick.
A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 14th at the Newman Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 218 Pittsboro St. Chapel Hill, NC 27516. A reception following the service will also be held at the Newman Center. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, March 17th at Bluestem Conservation Cemetery, 1900 Hurdle Mills Rd, Cedar Grove, NC 27231.
Known for her compassion and empathy, Nancy worked and volunteered in the community for decades. She was an avid reader, enjoyed solving many a NYTimes crossword puzzles, and loved the works of Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers, Carl Sagan, Stephen J. Gould, and many others. She will be remembered with love and missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the NC Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill, NC, the B. Everett Jordan Elementary School Library in Graham, NC, or the American Cancer Society.
