Nancy Jo Winslow

Nancy Jo Barr Winslow (81) of King, North Carolina was born September 16, 1942 in Winston-Salem to Isaac Hubert and Rachel Oberia Napier Barr and went to meet her Maker on September 27, 2023
Jo was a King resident in her young life having the "first playground in town". She was a beautiful little curly headed blonde who loved her "Baker boys" and her Daddy. She attended King High School and played basketball, played the claranet in the band and performed as a majorette. She was a talented teen. Everyone that knew her described her as "the most beautiful girl".
She married young (1960) and had a daughter (1961) and a son (1962).....and they lived the military life. There were stations in Germany (Nurnberg, Chrailsheim, Wildflecken and Frankfurt) and stateside (Fort Campbell, KY; Rural Hall, NC; King, NC; Fort Belvoir, VA - several times; Raleigh, NC; Redstone Arsenal, AL). She was a dedicated Army wife for 36 years and "Army Brat" Mom for-ever. She held the fort down for 2 of those years alone for Vietnam and Korea duty calls. She moved 26 times in 21 years of service. She was a pro at packing and moving and adapted with other military families which became "family away from home".
Jo worked many jobs in her life and gave 37 years of her career to the Federal Government working as a Civil Servant. Most notably she was a Patient Advocate at the Winston-Salem Veterans Administration Hospital and served our local military veterans willingly, faithfully and diligently. It was the perfect job for her. After retirement she regretted that retirement decision as she loved the veterans (all branches) and missed her job so much. She taught her family to love our country, to respect the flag and the true meaning of freedom (freedom is not free).
She earned the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award for her work and dedication to "her veterans" from the state of North Carolina. A well deserved award for all her work and efforts done with a loving, servant's heart!
Her hobbies included family, jewelry, floral arranging, weddings/catering, owls, pictures and crocheting. (Did we mention jewelry?) She was an excellent cook and was always wanting to share what she had. She loved the beach and would travel there any (every) time she could. She was a member of the Schooner Beach and Racquet Club Board in Myrtle Beach. She dedicated many hours to that role.
Her life changed in May of 2020 when she suffered a catastrophic stroke. She came a long way in her rehabilitation but plateaued in September of 2020. She lived at Village Care for 3 years and was provided wonderful care there. She decided on September 8th that she was ready to meet her Maker and declined meals and meds. She was moved to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice House where she was given great comfort care and passed away peacefully. At the time of her death, she was attended by her faithful son-in-law, Art and dear first granddaughter, Lauren. She will be missed greatly and loved always but we know she is in a better place and she is whole again thanks to her faith and Lord.
Jo is preceded in death by her parents Isaac Hubert Barr and Rachel Oberia Napier Barr of King and her favorite pet (a "wolfdog" named MiJe).
Jo is survived by two children - her daughter Cynthia Wannette "Wanny" Winslow Collier (Art) and son Sidney Micheal "Mike" Winslow (Lisa Boswell); 4 grandchildren - Lauren Amber Winslow Moore (Brad Denny), Logan Blayse Collier (Amber Holt), Kalin Siraye Collier Sprague (Holden) and Zakarya Traice Collier Peterson (Chris); and 6 great grandchildren - Sydney Faye Moore, Rigby Oray Collier, Waygrum Colt Collier, Berklee Ryne Sprague, Cade Gainsley Sprague and David Micheal Denny. She loved her family so much, gave so much of herself to everyone and was selfless in all she did. She also leaves behind several dedicated friends and "a partner in crime" who she loved as well.
Jo's funeral/interment will be a private family graveside gathering (as per her request) early October.
