Nancy Winters Obituary
Nancy Winters, age 82, of Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Huron, SD, died Tuesday, August 29, 2023 at Touchmark at All Saints in Sioux Falls, SD.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, September 1, 2023 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD with Pastor Bob O'Connor officiating. Burial will follow at the South Dakota State Veterans Cemetery in Sioux Falls, SD.
Nancy was born on October 26, 1940 in Huron, SD to Thelma (Roberts) and Norman Dethlef. She grew up in Huron but spent many summers in Presho, SD. Nancy graduated from Huron High School in 1958 and attended secretarial training at Northwest College of Commerce. She met James Winters in 1960 and the two were married in January of 1961. Together, they had four wonderful daughters. Nancy was a proud professional woman. She spent most of her career as a Procurement Officer for the Farmer's Home Administration (FmHA), a division of the USDA.
She will forever be remembered for her generous hugs and red lipstick. She enjoyed dancing with the love of her life at The Green Door in Fedora in their early years together and taught her daughters to be connoisseurs of all things fancy, especially how to curate an amazing wardrobe and the beauty of spending coffee time with good friends. She loved twist cones from the Zesto (though she refused to use the drive through) and could drive around for hours, reminiscing with her mom and teaching her girls about the Huron she remembered.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Jim; daughters Kelly (Tom) Newman of Crooks, SD, Carmen (Jeff) Nelson of Dell Rapids, SD, Kristen Winters of Mitchell, SD, and Caresa (Sean) O'Connor of Rapid City, SD; Grandchildren, Thomas (Mackenzie) Newman, Krystle Newman, Joseph Newman, Brock Newman, Jese (Jordan) Meyer, Jase Nelson, Greyce Northrup, Libby Falon (Brody Kunzmann), Maggie O'Connor (Mason Neumiller), Finn O'Connor, Winter O'Connor, and RJ O'Connor; and Great Granddaughters Elle Newman and Charlee Meyer.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents and a grandchild, Riley O'Connor.
