Nathan “Smitty” Alan Smith, 43, of Tolono, Illinois, passed away in the early hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, at his home.

Nate was born on April 17, 1982, in Tuscola, Illinois. He is survived by his son, Joe Smith of Arcola, IL; his mother, Carol Smith of Arcola; and many siblings, including Mandy Smith of Houston, TX; James “Jamey” Smith of Arthur, IL; Angie Goad (Wes) of Tuscola, IL; and Shawnee Gabbard of Atwood, IL. He had several other siblings, some of whom he met only in adulthood, each holding a special place in his life. Nate is also survived by many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews who brought him joy and pride.

Nate devoted his life to the construction industry. He spent the last four years with C-U Under Construction in Champaign, IL, a place he often described as a second family.

An outdoor enthusiast with a deep respect for nature, Nate loved camping, fishing, kayaking, and canoeing. He chased adrenaline in activities like skydiving, which still couldn’t quite quench his thirst for thrill and challenge.

He enjoyed playing Euchre, chess, poker, and other games that allowed his competitive streak and sharp mind to shine through.

More than anything, Nate valued time with his family and friends. His warmth, humor, and loyalty will be deeply missed.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, at Edwards Funeral Home, 221 East Main St., in Arcola, IL, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 7:00 p.m. Loved ones are encouraged to share memories and stories in celebration of Nate’s vibrant life.

A celebration of life, "Nate-style", will also be held at a later date and location, to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to his son, Joe Smith, or to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which provides resources for individuals and families affected by mental illness and substance use.
