Nathaniel “Sonny” Jones, III, was passed away peacefully at his home in Marietta, Georgia on February 18, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Nathaniel was born on October 31, 1945, to the late Nathaniel Jones Jr. and Roxana Lovett Jones in Heidelberg, Mississippi. He was baptized at an early age at Union Baptist Church of Heidelberg.
Nathaniel attended Oak Bowery Elementary School through the sixth grade. He then attended South Side High School in Heidelberg where he became a graduate of the Class of 1964. He received a B.S. Degree in Mathematics from Mississippi Valley State University in Itta Bena, MS, and also received his master’s degree in mathematics from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI. Over the course of 42 years, Nathaniel shared his talents with students and colleagues alike as a professor at Harris High School and Meridian Junior College. He later retired from AT&T Communications. Nathaniel was known and will be remembered as a reliable, hardworking, and helpful colleague. He will also be remembered for his unwavering dedication, gentle spirit, and the lasting impact he had on those around him, and he will be dearly missed.
Nathaniel was preceded in death by his parents, Nathaniel Jones Jr. and Roxana Jones; his brother, Samuel Jones; and his sister, Mammie Cooley.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Sharyn Kaye (Scott) Jones; his son, Darren Jones (Kattie) of Marietta, GA; his grandchildren, Jacob, Shawn, and Casley; his sisters, Marie Rhodes of Jackson, MS, Beverly Brockett (Linwood) of Waldorf, MD, Nedra Jones and Myrtle Jones of Houston, TX; his brothers, William Jones of Mobile, AL and Robert Jones of Jackson, MS; his special friends, Early and Betty Hughes; along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation for Nathaniel will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, from 12-1 pm at Webb & Stephens Funeral Homes-North. Funeral Services will begin at 1 pm in the chapel with Pastor B. Scarbrough officiating the services. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
