Neil Patrick Doogan, passed into the Lord's loving embrace on Monday, December 2, 2024, at the age of 62. Neil, the sixth child of John and Delores Doogan was born October 30, 1962, at St. Ann's Hospital in
Juneau, AK. With his siblings, he helped around the house and sold newspapers on the streets of Juneau most days. As a young child his mother called him her "finder of lost things." If it was lost, Neil could find it. Neil had many happy memories of his childhood, including family picnics, helping bake and decorate cookies during the holidays when he was young, and being the chief donut maker of the family as a teenager. He attended St. Ann's Catholic School in kindergarten and then Capitol Elementary, Marie Drake Junior High, and Juneau-Douglas High School. He graduated from Juneau-Douglas High School in 1981.
After graduating, Neil worked as a night stocker at Super Bear for a couple of years after high school. Feeling called to serve, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1985-1990. He served both in the US and internationally where he was deployed to Honduras and Germany. After leaving the Army, he lived in Fairbanks and received a Diesel Mechanic Certificate from Tanana Valley Community College. He later returned to Juneau and worked as the manager of the Alaska Sterile Laundry and later, Alaska Laundry. Neil was also a successful businessman. He and his wife Alma owned and operated the J & J Deli and Asian Mart from 2011-2023. During this time, he also worked for the State of Alaska as a journeyman in building maintenance.
A strong life-long Catholic, Neil served as an altar boy as a youth and as an adult joined the Knights of Columbus and attained the rank of 4th Degree Knight. He met and eventually married the love of his life, Alma Yadao, on September 16, 2000. Neil was a devoted husband and father, sharing the blessing of three children in a loving Catholic home. Filled with laughter, sometimes tears, and lots of prayer, his home and life were filled with charity for others and the noise of children. His fondest memories were of family get togethers. His willingness to help whomever needed it will be missed by many.
Neil is survived by his wife Alma Doogan, children and spouses; Krista (Drecar Delcastillo), Nicklaus, Isaac, and three grandchildren Noah, Alaina, and Nathaniel Delcastillo. He is also survived by eleven siblings, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceding Neil in death are his parents John and Delores Doogan and sisters Linda and Mary Rose Doogan.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, January 4, 2025, at St. Paul's Catholic Church at 1:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Life reception immediately following at the parish hall (St. Peters Hall), 9055 Atlin Drive,
Juneau, AK 99801. All friends are welcome.
